SusanCarter wrote:What are prefolds? I always thought they were another name for shaped nappies.
They are rectangular nappies made up of varying layers of cotton. The middle layer is always the thickest. This allows the nappies to be not quite as bulky compared to how they would be if a constant thickness all over.

We use prefolds with our DD who is now 11 months old and now actually prefer them to disposables, even overnight. Its the quality of the nappy wrap that counts and keeps baby dry. We use Motherease Rikki wraps (velcro, the way to go). I would advise finding out if your local city or county council do a real nappy lending scheme. Ours did. they lent use loads of different types of real nappies for 2 weeks free of charge. Tried them with the little one to see which worked best. Absolutely great, we were really confused with all the choice.
other tip i would give you is get onto your local freecycle group and either watch for any second hand nappies coming up or ask for some. We got ours free on there but they had hardly been used. It was sheer luck they were the type we had picked as best during the free trial.0 -
Just to update on the ec seeing as I did ask about it in the first place: Alice is now six weeks old and we've been doing it since we got home from hospital (although still using terrys as back up). At first we were having to do 2 loads of nappies virtually every day but now our catch rate has improved and we're down to one load a day. Hopefully soon it'll be none!0

Now this is my kind of thread!
I love real nappies!
We have tots bots bamboozles, fuzi bunz and swaddlebees at the min, I somtimes use fleece liners. I have just made myself some reuseable wipes and use them with a tea tree/water solution in a spray!
Initially I bought a selection from the nappy lady and ebay and then picked the ones that suited us.
Just a note to everyone, do you know that ebay have stopped selling second hand nappies??? You may see a few adds but they are always pulled before auction end... I am gutted as its such an excellent resource and personally I don;t see the problem in buying 2nd hand! You wash them 1st don't you???0 -
Lyndsey as far as im aware they have stopped the silly ban on cloth nappies. i read on a cloth forum i use that they seem to be leaving them up now. I too dont see a problem with buying 2nd hand (i infact did this to boost my range) but ebay seen it as "used undies" which is a bit daft really.
re the illimination communication, im thinking of trying that soon. My little girl is 6.5 months and until recently never had any signs of going to the loo. Now she kind of grunts a bit so im hoping to start setting her on the potty, fingers crossed it helps train her earlier, but ill be sad to have her out of cloth lol.... might just have to have another one to continue with the nappies lol0 -
I think that Ebay still don’t allow the sale of second hand nappies. I tried a few weeks ago and the listing was removed. There are a few for sale, but these are ones that have slipped through the net. I think this is a shame as used nappies are a good way of passing old nappies on, or trying them out cheaply. There is a petition on ebay that you can sign. I have since found other sites to buy and sell on. www.thenappylady.co.uk has quite a large section. www.usednappy.co.uk is an auction site www.thenappysite.co.uk is another good one. I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones I have tried.0

I'm into my second week now of totsbots bamboozles plus motherease wraps and am finding it hard to get bodies and babygros to fit over the nappies - am having to go up a size.
Can anyone advise me of the more "generous" brands sizewise ?
Like some others here .. I'd highly recommend Cut4Cloth. I've used a website ( bowbelle.co.uk ) that are giving 15% off all their products - till end of the month I think. I'm posting it on the discount /code thread but the code is 2801.

I've just started using a vest from Sainsbury's and it seems to have a lower leg so covers the nappy better than other make vests I've had.0

Another update on elimination communication. We are generally using so few nappies now that we do a load about every three days. I estimate that based on a conventional usage of 7 nappies per day, we were using more than that up to three months when we "broke even". Now, at 4 1/2 months I reckon we have saved just over 120 nappies. I'm now looking into training pants as it seems so wasteful to be washing a whole nappy just for one wee. If anyone is thinking about trying elimination communication, it I would definitely recommend it both for other aspects and the moneysaving/environmental point of view. You might think it would be a lot of work but it does not take up that much time and now I am saving time on washing nappies. In a way it's not much different to the time you would spend on toilet/nappies if you had a baby and a toilet training toddler. I have been very suprised at how easy it has been.0

www.lizziesrealnappies is offering a discount on Tots Bots Bamboozles during September. They have special offers every month - so it's well worth keeping an eye on!0
