Real Nappies (Merged Discussion Thread)

After much research myself on nappies, my Little Lambs sample arrived today! Just waiting for the Bumbles and Motherease wrap from The Nappy Lady. I do want to check things out a lot before I rush off and buy some. I know the resale value is good on Ebay, but I want to get it right rather than a mistake.
And its soooo cute!
Mind you, my mother, who used Terries for my brother and I, feels that I am being daft and creating too much work for myself in real nappies. I do admit that with 6 of us in the house already, I get behind with the washing on a regular basis and extra loads will not help the matter - but ho hum!0 -
Charlotte - I had exactly the same response from my mum - I reckon that their generation is one scarred for life from boiling up terries and drying them on every radiator in the house
I explained that:
Modern cloth nappies come in all shapes and sizes including ones that look just like disposables, so no folding and pinning unless you prefer it
Modern washing machines sterilise at 60 degrees so no need to soak - a quick rinse cycle is all you need to do prior to the wash
Tumble driers can help cut down on drying indoors when you can't peg out
With a baby you'll be washing most days anyway so you just need to remember to pop the nappies in with the washing
I'm not sure she believes me though!0 -
My goodness, I didnt' realise it would be so easy to get excited about real nappies! I've just found myself spending literally hours *looks embarassed* trawling the net for more information about them.
Charlotte, what did you mean by Little Lambs sample? Is that like a trial pack you can buy? Am leaning strongly towards tots bots (because they're so cute) and terries (mostly as a backup if I run short).0 -
chubacheroo - i have totsbots (bought special offer at the Baby Show) they are great but I wish that I had experimented a bit more and put together a selection (am doing that now for stage 2).
There is a forum at https://www.babycentre.co.uk for cloth nappies and the girls make great suggestions for ones to try, especially for different kinds of babies e.g. heavy wetters. It seems that it's good to have a selection of different ones for different occasions too e.g. different type for nightwear

Ooh I was working on the Tots Bots stand at the Baby Show .. they really are my favourite nappy .. but I do agree with you, it is good to have a selection of brands!
My little boy is 3 now and out of nappies but I used to use Fuzzibunz or Nature babies stuffables during the day and well-boosted unbleached Tots Bots at night. And when he was completely dry, I sold my Tots for £6 each on the second hand forums on a parenting site!! :T :T
If I were to have another baby I'd definitely try the Tots Bamboozles, they are sooooo soft and lovely, and they now do them in popper fix (bloody excellent idea!!) and colours as well, and I'd also love to try a BumGenius but I dont think wanting to try a new nappy is reason enough to have a third child!!!We’ve had to remove your signature. It really depends which system you use - Motherease which is one of the most common: you need:
3 to 4 Wraps in each size for your baby e.g. small, medium, large (personally I would start off with disposables when baby is newborn as they grow out of the smallest size wraps very quickly and it doesn't end up cost effective)
Shaped nappies: minimum of 10 (but you will be washing a lot) 15 is more comfortable, 20 if you don't want to wash too often
A bucket with a lid and carrying handle (or probably 2 - one for upstairs and one for downstairs).
Disposable liners: the cheapest come in a roll and cost about 2p each. They can in theory be washed when baby has just done a wee, but they do shrink in the wash and concertina - and generally fall apart by wash no. 2. If baby has done a poo you throw them away and it means the nappy gets less soiled thus less cleaning products needed.
Personally I didn't use any special washing stuff - just non-bio powder. I have to say that I used real nappies with baby no. one, but didn't used them with baby no. 2, and won't be using them with baby no 3! The main problem for me was that I found I had to change nappies more frequently with real nappies, I found 2 children hard enough to cope with the extra washing without a nappy load as well - and I found that rather than have wet washing all over the house, I was tumble drying them - which was neither good for the pocket or the environment.0 -
Have a look at the real nappies discussion thread. There's loads of info on that to help you on your way0
