Kaspersky v Norton

  • As a long term Norton hater (actually Symantec hater - Symantec was for a long time the graveyard of good software which got very little subsequent development). Norton was slow, ineffective and ate your CPU.

I usually build my own PCs but this year PC World had an iresistable deal so I bought one. Norton Internet Security 2009 was preloaded so I left it on there. It is terrific. So much so that I bought it after the trial period.

I have used lots of others not including Kaspersky so I can't comment on that but Norton now beats all the others I have tried.
  • Kaspersky is good to use. Norton will kill the system speed and take long time to scan.
I tried Kaspersky a few years ago, and it caused random system crashes, with the loss of whatever I was working on. I got a refund on Kaspersky and switched to Norton, and the problem went away. Yes, it slowed the system down quite a lot, but I prefer slow to losing data.

Sorry Emma, Customer support is useless, it's now done from India and they appear to be totally incompetent, if the fault is outside their checklist, as was the case with me, they haven't a clue what to do.

    Dr. Beaker.
I have found Norton technical support second to none, and is one of the things that keeps me with Norton. First line support seems limited to checklists, as you say (which does the trick a lot of the time), but when they run off the end of the checklist they escalate the problem to second line support who really know what they're doing. Why is the fact that it's from India relevant? Their English fluency is fine -- sounds a bit racist to me.
  • I use Eset. Its very good, you don't even notice its running (unlike most). I've heard nothing but bad things about Norton.

  • pcpro.co.uk/reviews shows "professional" comparisons of the packages.
I've had Norton for quite a few years now and have found it fine, especially with a teenager who browses and downloads all sorts! Customer support has always been excellent.

At home I have used F-Secure for the past 4 years (free from Barclays at the time) and I think it is excellent.

I am with Barclays and I too used F-Secure quite happily. When my free subscription expired I switched to the free Kaspersky software and am really impressed with it. My PC runs faster now as Kaspersky only uses around half the system resources that F-Secure did.

My local pc shop has a board with a list of the worst ever programs on it.
    Near the top is Norton....

So what are the others, please do tell? I agree on Norton, absolutely pathetic for decades now, you'd think they'd learn...
  • Need to sort out new security for the PC

Have been looking at the relative merits of Norton 3.0 compared to Kaspersky 2010

What are people's thoughts? (Without geting tooooooo technical please!)

    Thanks

Don't use kaspersky... It'll cause you network printer problems and email (outlook) problems, it's difficult to use if your a little unsure with comps.

Norton 360 v3 is superb if your not sure how to keep your computer up to date with virus info... Norton internet security is NO LONGER SLOW !!! I run this on all of my business computers and home network.

If you want a good free one instead, try Zone Alarm or Grisoft AVG Anti Virus.

I would always advise good free adware protection too in the form of Ad-Aware.

    Hope this helps...
