OS Daily Thread - Sunday 20th September

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Sunday 20th September. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning all

Donnygal and lillilbet - I am really glad you enjoyed the song. :p
Red and Bitsy - I knew it was a risk.. he is a bit like Marmite as I said, but they danced to it on Strictly last night and the lyrics were so romantic I just couldn't resist.. :rotfl::rotfl:
Lillibet - you could plant your garlic sets in large tubs and then just take them with you when you move maybe? I grew mine in 2ft x 9inch troughs last year and they grew perfectly! I put in two rows of 3 I think in each. Or just wait until you move - I was late planting mine - didn't do it til the end of October which meant they weren't ready til about July, but they all grew Ok.
Noahs - Hope you feel better soon hon
Taplady - Hope your cousin did well
Tris logged on last night and was in a really p*ssy mood. The new meds are making him down and though he was a lot clearer last night in his thinking, he was railing at the world so didn't stay online long which was actually a relief as he was using me as a verbal punchbag a bit. I tried to just deflect it all but I think that annoyed him even more!
Have a bit of backache this morning from leaning over my bench to plant up all my lovely new lavender plug plants. Worth it at the time but uncomfortable today.
My friend in London who had her lumpectomy this week received her flowers from me yesterday and she says they are gorgeous. They are the same ones I sent my mother for her birthday on the 17th so Rachel has promised to take a pic so I can see what they look like!
My OS-iness today will either be very home bound (lots of darning to do and/or cards to make) or totally garden led depending on the weather. They said it may actually rain for the first time in nearly a fortnight but if it doesn't then it's more general potting on and tidying to be done and one of my tomato plants has blight so I need to deal with that. Also have more beetroot, leeks and carrots that desperately need harvesting.
Food wise I think we are going for something simple like spicy bacon, sausage and bean casserole with mash.
Hope you have a peaceful Sunday. Warm gentle hugs.giffor anyone who wants one!

Good morning MSD and all who follow.

It's such a shame that the meds are affecting Tris in that way - it must be frustrating for him and everyone who cares for him. Let's hope he soon gets used to them and the bad feelings ease off a bit.

Well, nothing much to report except we are still organising for our visitors who arrive this evening. DH is getting the spare bedroom organised - not to a complete finish because it still needs a lot of work - but it will be somewhere to lay our heads, apparently! I need to cook some chicken and make a salad, then dinner will be easy to sort out once they've had the guided tour and we've opened a bottle of the falling-down stuff! I'm looking forward to it all, just wish we were more 'ready'. The weather is meant to be improving, but I've told them to pack jumpers as well as t-shirts! They've also both got colds, so I hope they leave them where they caught them!

I'm still finishing off a knitted baby outfit for them to take back to their daughter who is pregnant - just hope I get it done and wrapped before they turn up. Doesn't the time just fly when you have a lot to do?!

Anyway, I haven't read the thread from yesterday, so I hope everyone who has been unwell is feeling better today. I'll log in whenever I can during the week but, if I don't get much chance, have a great week, everyone.

    Morning :hello:

Thriftlady, you write a much better review than me :D
    Haribo, chickens! YAY! lol :D

The 'price' of our eggs has come down to £1.56 each :rotfl:

We've just inherited a compost bin and some veg seeds from our neighbour - her granddaughter gave them to us  Our compost bin is full and there's a huge compost heap, I can put it all the new bin now and the garden will be tidy again :D

I made a cake with Canderel yesterday. Well, I say cake - it couldn't decide if it was a cake or a biscuit  It was cracked and didn't rise and had almost no flavour. But the chickens enjoyed it :rotfl: Today I'll be making cake with proper sugar :D Maybe some flapjacks too

We've got some damsons that are starting to wrinkle, I'll make jelly out of them later.

I bought a big bag of Minstrels the other day, ate the lot (yum) and entered the code from inside the bag onto THIS website and got a free Happy Feet DVD :D

    Morning all

Just sat with DS watching Charlie and Lola:rolleyes:
feeling slightly better but still have a terrible chesty cough and flu like head and aches. Been having D&V yesterday too but that is prob the tamiflu( decided to take it due to my asthma). I really dont think I can or should go to work tomorrow.....apart from me being ill I also do not want to infect my patients or 2 members of staff who are pregnant.
i will be given hassle by matron for being off as everyone who is ill is a skivver:rolleyes::mad:...think i may try to sort an RCN member to come with me to meeting in 2 weeks re sickness.
Making roast chicken today for tea thats about all the OS I can manage.
I hate being ill I get frustrated at not being able to do things.
Luckily DS showing no signs yet.
OH is taking him swimming today as he missed his disabled swim party yesterday due to me being ill and OH being at work......DS also wants to have the party food they normally have here at home when he gets back:rolleyes: so OH has to go to MR T for mini cornish pasties, sausage rolls etc....my purse could do without it but am not arguing with DS about it.
MSD sorry Tris is suffering with the new meds, it must be frustrating for him and for you. how do you make the spicy bacon sausage and bean casserole? sounds yummy:D
Tru/thriftlady I gave in and ordered hugh`s book using some money I made selling a dress on ebay:T
HJ very jealous of the chickens:p I want some.

off to grab a coffee and top up the Vicks on my chest:rotfl:

PS my lovely brother is running the Great north Run today too...in aid of National Autistic Society...Good luck Richard:T:T:j:D

  • Morning all

I made a HM Chinese last night from one of the recipes on Kwaichi's recipe thread & it turned out really well, hubby really enjoyed it. Today I'm doing chicken breasts stuffed with cheese & wrapped in bacon with mash & veg.
Washing is on the line, DW been emptied & I'm having a cuppa, I'll do breakfast in a while, scrambled egg on toast.
    Have a good day.

  • Morning Guys!

Not feeling so well today and just waiting on the nurse coming. Yesterday afternoon I started feeling strange and had a Hypo which I havent had for a while-I slept for 3hrs. The nurse came back to check on me. She thinks it could be a flare of my illness but hoping its not.

Was disappointed with the Doubre Beef dish which cost a small fortune. The beef was very tender and tasty but the liquid very runny and OH/I followed recipe to the latter:confused: There is enough for 2 more meals for us which have been bagged, but when they are used next time, maybe we can thicken it up?

WM isnt on as we have caught up with everything. DW has been on and emptied. House quite clean and tidy but DD has her chore list to do later.

OH forgot to get meat out the freezer last night, so not sure whats for dinner:confused:

Anyway, I need a coffee and some toast.

    Hugs to all.

Welcome to D1965 - you'll like it here.

PenPin - hope you start feeling better soon. Hope it's not a flare-up.

NPMummy - it's horrid when you are genuinely ill and have to phone in to work to say you aren't coming in. It always makes you feel like a skiver, but you are obviously not well enough to go in and, as you say, you have to be concerned for other staff members, especially pregnant ones. Take time off and concentrate on getting better - that way, everyone benefits, work as well.

  • Morning everyone :) Here's to a good day today.

I woke up earlier with another headache, but going back to bed for a couple of hours has sorted it out. I'm getting used to them now. I wouldn't exactly call me bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I'm awake! Now I'm sat here trying to make a to-do list for the day to make sure I get at least something useful done.

    My OS-iness for today:

    Tidying the kitchen and bathroom
    Hoovering
Transforming the leeks in my fridge into a big batch of leek and potato soup
Doing a spot of gardening - the borders need weeding here, and I wouldn't mind getting the practice in for my own kitchen garden of the future
Sorting through old cook books to find ones I rarely use, and then selling them somehow
I've got to find a recipe for "jar" cookies; I saw it once and can't find it again. It was basically the dry ingredients for cookies put into a jar with the instructions of how to bake on the label. I want to make some of those as Christmas presents.

With regards to dinner, I'm not sure what to do. I've got some leftover Amatriciana sauce, and might just end up chucking that between slices of bread with some cheese in, and toasting it. Toasties all'Amatriciana :D

And if I get chance, I'd really like to get some more sewing done! I've been trying to find ways to avoid doing it lately, so I need to get it finished.

PP - hope you feel better soon. I've had that happen with slow cooker meals, and I usually add a bit of instant mash to thicken it up a bit. :)
D1965 - welcome to the thread! I'm quite new, too.
Tru/Thriftlady - I'm really envious and think I might have to make room on my (already packed) bookshelves for another tome.

(((hugs))) to those in need of one, and may everyone have a nice day.

    Kitchenbunny x

  • Morning!
We got 1 1/4 lbs blackberries yesterday and nettle stings and goarse and thistle pricked. There were still some unripe ones so we'll try again next week if the weathers decent.I think we got 1/2 lb more last time so they are all in mums freezer to combine when we've finished.
DD is going to grandmas this morning so I need to tidy and clean downstairs. Also boiling and roasting a small basics gammmon for sandwiches, roasting my cherry toms and other veg for pasta sauce tomorrow and making chicken and bacon pie with roast pots for tea. The small piece of leftover bacon joint seems to have defrosted with some chicken (that I got cheap, cooked and froze) and I think I'm going to do them in an oniony white sauce for the filling.
Yesterday's bread worked texture wise but tastes a little strange-think it must be the cheese and onion flavouring. It has, though, inspired me to make some from scratch next week. I also need to iron this afternoon as I am at work tomorrow then collecting dd, making lunches for tuesday, having early tea then up at school for a meeting to teach parents how to teach to read at 6pm. I can see its going to be a real rush so I need to get organised today.
Hope after work on tuesday I can relax a little and start making some headway into the jobs I've been saving until dd started school but haven't yet had time for. I have some decorating, mending, spring cleaning(yes I know its late!) of the whole house to do and the garden needs a real sort out. When I have finally got on top of all these I'm looking forwards to a little me time and getting back into my crosstitch which I used to love doing but haven't had time for for years as a working single mum who sleeps too much!

I hope everyone has a good day. Hugs to those that need-oh and I'd take the rcn rep NPM-we pay enough for them and if your matron is a cow you need all the support you can get. I'd keep the tamiflu packaging to show her too so she can't accuse you of skiving.Hope you feel better soon.

  • Good Morning All

Back from London where I had a fantastic time at the Coldplay concert, they were brilliant (cant say the same for Girls Aloud though). Yesterday OH picked us up and we spent the day wandering around Theatreland, spent a little bit and treated ourselves but it was really enjoyable & the weather was fantastic. Will be back on the OS wagon bigtime this week.

Had a lie in as was very tired but have woken with a very fuzzy muzzy head - hope that clears soon as want to get on. Roast Pork for lunch, OH is having a friend round to watch the footie & I will be mainly ironing and getting a head start on the paperwork. Need to menu plan, do Tesco online shop and pop down the local shop for some packed lunch stuff.

MSD - so sorry about your conversation with Tristan last night (((hugs)))

Also (((hugs))) to PP, and everyone under the weather.x
