Small question about direct debits

There is a direct debit due on Monday on my card, i allowed a family member to temporarily use my card for a few months but i'm wanting to stop it all completely as they don't have the money to pay it. If i used my banks website online will that cancel it completely? So there is no way they can lift money out my account on Monday?

  • You can't set a direct debit up on a card. That would be a continuous payment authority (CPA).

A direct debit is set up on the 'account'. There's a subtle difference.

    So which is it?

Either way, you won't have time to stop the transaction because a) if it's a DD it'll already be in the system, and b) if it's a CPA the bank won't help - it's down to the account holder to cancel with the people claiming the funds.

Not sure what this has to do with savings and investments though?
  • Well i dont recall seeing a debit card section in the forum but if there is one you can show me were it is. They had problems with their own debit cards and asked to use mine for a few months which i have. I will just cancel it anyway and get them to phone tomorrow and make other arrangements from now on.

So you gave them your only card? You're going to get yourself into deep water with this. Much better to get the card back off them in my opinion than alert the bank to your abuse of the account T&Cs by trying to cancel a payment you yourself haven't agreed/made.
  • No they dont have the card physically, they only use it to pay their phone bill but they are able to use their own card now. Nothing is in my name and if you phone companies up and ask them to pay for things on a different card.......you'd be surprised at how easy it is to do.

And if they can't pay one month/quarter, will the phone company revert to trying the original, ie your, card?

More a rhetorical question as I appreciate you won't know the answer...yet.

And if you ever have the misfortune to have fraud on your account, you'd probably be very surprised at how easily the bank says 'No' to your claim.

As you have allowed someone else to use your account details, the bank would be completely entitled to make you pay the full amount of any fraudulent transactions.
  • I've no idea what they will do but they will use their own card from now on, my question was is there any way to stop them from taking it out of my money before Monday?

Answered in post #2, no chance.

Is it a CPA then? ie they gave your card details to the phone company x months ago?
  • Yes i guess it is CPA then. And i know it is too late now as when i cancelled it it said to make sure it was at least 2 working days before payment is due.

Today is Monday as far as the banks are concerned. Payment will already be on its way.
