Small question about direct debits

Yes i guess it is CPA then. And i know it is too late now as when i cancelled it it said to make sure it was at least 2 working days before payment is due.
You were able to cancel a CPA with your bank...and not with the payee? That doesn't seem like a CPA to me...more like a DD. Are you sure your family member hasn't somehow got the account details (from the card maybe?) and set up a direct debit?
  • Oh it doesnt matter what it is now. For the record it was me that spoke on the phone to the company allowing them to take the payments from my card. Might aswell just see what happens on Monday now.

Do you mean that you lent a family member your credit card, and that your minimum (or full) payment on that credit card is due out of your personal account on Monday? Is that the direct debit payment that you wish to stop?
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

So you didn't let the family member use your card/account then (as you said earlier). You simply agreed to pay their bill for them for a while. It's a lot clearer now. However, I'm not sure who'll be able to cancel the CPA. Although it's your card/account, the phone contract is with your family friend. Hmmm?

I'm still puzzled by your "when i cancelled it it said to make sure it was at least 2 working days before payment is due" statement, because as I said earlier that sounds like a DD to me.
  • lol oh God this mental torture here. Right okay let me say this very clearly and slowly. They have a phone contract and at one point were not able to make the monthly payments on their own card so asked me if they could use my debit card so i said yes. So they phoned up and explained and let them know the situation and put me on the phone and i gave permission for this to happen and gave the company my details. So its been fine up until now and now they are able to start using their own card again so i don't want the money being taken out of my account on Monday.

I was only asking if it was too late to cancel this before Monday so that they can't take any money from my account. Direct debit or CPA or whatever other fancy terms there are.......all i know is it is listed under the Direct Debit section of my online banking and it is now cancelled. The message said to make sure it was 2 working days before the transaction was due to be made so i guess i am actually too late. But some people consider that fraud........and the banks will not have anything to do with it. So if i phone them tomorrow there is absolutely nothing they can do to stop this company touching my money? The bank is powerless?
  • OK it's taken a while, but now we've teased the facts from you here's the situation...

You have a DDI (not a CPA) on your account for someone elses phone bill.
You can cancel the DD with the bank (there may be timescales as you've ascertained).
You're also advised (under the DD guarantee) to notify the DD originator (that's the phone company).
If you don't want them to take the money on Monday you could claim (after the fact, but same day) under the DD guarantee...but I wouldn't suggest you do that because it could be fraudulent. After all, you knew the amount and the date to be collected didn't you?

A word of warning though, if your friend doesn't pay his bill next month the phone company could reinstate the DDI (under AUDDIS, and as they often do according to reports on here if you don't cancel the arrangement with the DD originator) so keep a close eye on your account from now on.
let me say this very clearly and slowly
In your OP next time eh? ;)
  • They will be phoning the company and arranging payments on their own card in future but the problem is this next payment due on Monday. The direct debit has been cancelled online already. Well it is their phone and in their name, i dont get bills or letters so i only know it is out on Monday because they tell me it is and to be fair it is always the 21st of the month it comes out anyway.

Do the Halifax have a customer services number for weekends so that maybe i could speak to them?

Does your family member know you've done this, and will they pay themselves on Monday? What about late payment fees and/or credit file damage?

    Yes I'm sure they do.
  • As far as i know they will pay themselves on their own card. I think it is best i phone and see what they have to say. I will write it down and make sure i get the department and their name etc so it is all recorded just incase they tell me one thing and then do another on Monday.
  • Never had any trouble getting hold of someone at the Halifax whatever day or night.

The confusion over payment type (which you can find out easily via your statement) is very relevant. Whereas a direct debit can be cancelled (with a few days notice), a payment direct from your debit card can not be stopped by your bank - only the company taking the payment. The worse case scenario for this would be to have to destroy your card and be reissued with a new one.

    So always opt for dd...
