thanks for the detailed explanation but the system is vista home basic do i need different instructions?
Unfortunately yes. Since I have managed to avoid Vista, someone else will need to provide the instructions.

Please note that you possibly have TWO problems: I was dealing with the one where your virtual memory setting may be incorrect and Vista is giving you messages about this. The general slowness of the laptop/hard disk may or may not be something to do with a virus.

If that were my machine I'd be bringing it back to XP, because Vista is a resources hog and that laptop isn't very powerful.
  • To change your virtual memory in vista do the following

    1) Click the windows button on task bar, to bring up menu
    2) right click on computer and click properties
    3) under tasks menu (on left) click system properties
    4) click the "advanced" tab at the top
    5) click the settings tab under performance
    6) click advanced tab
    7) under virtual memory it will tell you what yours is, i have 3GB of ram and mine is set to 2GB VM
    8) click change tab
    9) untick the box at the top
    10) click custom size button
    11) enter a value, i would recommend something like 1GB, so enter 1024 for maximum, and intial size enter 512MB
    12) click the set tab, and keep clicking ok to close all the boxes
    13) reset the laptop, it should run quicker

I have never had a problem, im on my 2nd vista laptop (one only had 512MB ram) and they both ran fine, it just may need the ram boost you have added

vista has so much more over Xp, security wise.. Vista is a resource hig but the system pack things have made it better! Make sure you have downloaded all the updates. I ran vista on 512MB of ram and it ran as quickly as my xp pc on 2Gb ram.

To downgrade to xp, you need a disc, a legit key and need to wipe the hd with vista on it, it would have to be a totally clean install. an xp license is about £60

That is a low powered laptop to have Vista running on it. It probably would be worth going back to XP, or maybe even getting 7 when it comes out which is less resource hungry than Vista.

On the right machine Vista in my opinion is very good and I now much prefer it over XP (and I use both daily).

i'm useless with computers so changing to another op is it something i can do or do i need a specialist? (hopefully not pc world)

i know nothing about the Hijack logs so can't say but run your pc using a decent anti virus like avast, do a defragment and have a firewall, you should be safe
