  • Right click on My Computer and select properties. How much RAM is it showing on there?

  • popup could be an advert to dupe you into buying software or malware that will infect your PC.

low memory or low virtual memory?

if virtual memory could be your hard drive is getting full..
  • what OS you are using?

Adding memory will require an increase in the size of the page file=virtual memory. Yours might not be set to have a 'system managed size', and so it won't have changed from what was set there originally. How you change it will depend on what your operating system is, but on the offchance it is XP you'd do the following:
    • Hold down the Windows key (probably next to Ctrl key at bottom left) and press the Pause/Break key - this will bring up System Properties window, usually seen in Control Panel
    • Now release both keys
    • Click on the Advanced tab
    • In the Performance section at the top, click on the Settings button
    • In Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab
    • At the bottom, under Virtual Memory, click on the Change button
    • Make sure that the correct (or only) drive is selected, and click on the radio button in front of "System managed size"
    • Click on the Set button to its right
    • Now click on the OK button on each screen until you get back to where you started
When you reboot, the size of the page file will be adjusted to be (probably) 1½ times your total real memory, and you shouldn't get messages about insufficient virtual memory any more.

sorry i should have said it's windows vista

tbh this laptop has nevver seemed right since pc world put a new hard drive in it's seemd sluggish and slow which is why i recently installed some more ram although it's as slow as ever.

i don't have the trust anymore in pc world to take it back to them because when they installed the new hard drive they forgot to install the activation key code the guys on here advised me what to do.

Post a Hijackthis log here so that we can see what is actually running on your system.
