Candles as heating!

We have an inglenook fireplace and whether or not the fire is lit we put tealights (in holders), or candles, on it. The psychological effect of flames in the hearth just make us feel cosier.0

An inglenook fireplace - I'm well and truly green with envy now
I bet it looks absolutely brilliant lit up like that.

Central Fife!!
Its sunny but its not warm!!
i'm in the same area and this morning it was tempting to put the heat on but i'm moving on oct 1st and i'm determined not to put the heat on here as this place is expensive enough as is!
i've been wondering about the candle/heat thing myself, i do know on a few occasions when i've had them in the bathroom i've been able to stay warm in the tub a lot longer than usual so they probably do give off a decent heat if they are in a small area0 -
We did this when we were new house-owners on a very tight budget (newly graduated with low paying jobs!). We're talking mid 1990's but IKEA used to do a fabulously cheap range of cream "church"-style candles, and of course, very cheap nightlights. :T Looked brilliant, was nice and warm, and people made very nice comments about how stylish it looked.
The only warning I would have is that after a season of cheap heating costs, thanks to the candles, we did have to splash some of the money we had saved on re-painting the ceiling (and it took several coats, and we had to do the whole room, of course, not just the affected area!!) - even though the highest shelf we had put them was on the mantlepiece, the burning candles still made little (and not-so-little!) brown circles on our white ceiling!!
But white paint is comparatively cheap for a large tub, and as long as you do your own painting, the labour is free, so I would say go for the candles!

Last night, I had to put the heating on as it was too cold here.
A jumper did not help take the chill off.
But because of this thread, I decided not to put the heating on tonight, but light numerous candles in my living room.
I have to say... it does feel warmer, without the heating on tonight.
And not too hot, like it did last night.
So maybe, at that point when its between autumn and deepest coldest winter, a few candles is the way to go, before turning the heating on.
I am not sure if it is more economical though.... but worth looking into.
Thanks OP, for asking the question....and making me investigate0 -
This is my treat, I have a bunch of candles in the bathroom, I use the votive type that go in a glass cup, so not likely to fall over or anything and start a fire. They last for about fifteen hours all told, so last for ages if i just light them when having a bath. Maybe it is psychological but it does take the chill off on Autumn night and it's lovely and soothing to soak in the bath with no lights on.Mortgage

I remember a friend buying a huge number of candles at an auction one year and she swore burning a lot of them at once heated up a room - of course it does create a fire hazard especially if you have children or animals running around.~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0

Tell me...does the cost of the candles not come to more than the cost of just putting the fire on for an hour or two?Val.0
