Candles as heating!

Serious question! Do any of you light a bunch of candles instead of put the heating on?

Take a coldish september afternoon like today up in Scotland where I live!! A dozen tea lights really makes a difference in a room approx 4m x 5m!!

When I was a student I would sit playing xbox with a couple of candles at my feet and it warms you up surprisingly well!!!

a warm woolly jumper, thick socks and a throw would be more snuggly than half a dozen candles wouldn't it? and it would cost less

We often light several candles on an autumn evening. I'm not sure how much actual difference it makes, but it certainly makes the room seem cosier.

Yes they do make a difference. I was using them last year.

A few plain t lights and a couple of scented ones. T lights from Ikea are a good buy as they are a good price. (need to stock up again).

Although it's nice here today it's getting a bit chilly at night so candles are going on tonight.

  • I did exactly that last night, and I'll be doing the same tonight! I'm not sure how much of it is psychological, but it does make the house seem much toastier. That said, I've only got a wee living room which doesn't take a huge amount of heating

    Where is "up in Scotland"

Lovely afternoon up in my bit of Scotland - sitting in T shirt and not even had a jacket on when I was out earlier

We're in the Highlands...so far today we've had beautiful sun, dark clouds and rain and a nip in the air....take your pick. :D

I love candles to give a cosy feel but I wouldn't have thought they would give off much in the way of heat.

Same here. So far today it's been fog, rain, sun, cloud, gales, sun, rain, sun. :D

And I'd love to see my OH's face if I told him I was lighting candles to stave off the Highland cold. :rotfl:
  • We'll frequently have a few candles lit of an evening; it really takes the chill off. I definitely agree about a fleece/throw and thick socks though :D Also, a hot drink works nicely too. If you're sitting on the floor to play xbox, sit on a throw or folded blanket and just fold the edge over your feet - I do that sometimes!

I'm thinking of the little matchstick girl story.

The candles will give off a little heat but then so would a hotwater bottle.
Being MSE you could use the slow cooker in the evening to cook soup. Put the slow cooker on a tray in the living room as that throws off loads of heat.;)
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
