Seriously guys, get a VoIP account and use your free inclusive minutes to call all europe, america, australia, etc, etc, for free. I've done this for a few years now and its great.

I think it has more to do with the fact that you can not shop around for a roaming service supplier and that people do not consider roaming costs when they choose a network that has more to do with it.

I believe there are companies that offer good rates on roaming. Generally they supply either a Sim card for you to use, or you pick on up in the country you are visiting.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Agreed, but you will then have a different number whilst roaming which creates problems for incoming calls and texts.

Is anyone going to try and get out of their contract based on this then?

Already tried but T-Mobiles line atm is "roaming is not part of your contract". Sent some letters to them / Oftel etc and am waiting for a reply...

Oh, good luck. Have you seen the thread about the EU roaming rates going up? There's a couple of guys there currently suing them about it.
  • there's details on bitterwallet.com on how to argue your case that roaming IS a core service (apologies for the lack of link, I'm a new user and it won't let me!)

the argument goes that since you don't pay extra for it and it's an inherent part of the contract because it is setup for everyone automatically.

so you should be able to cancel without paying a fee.

having said that I'm with t-mobile (3 years and counting) and have no desire to leave cos they've been great so far.
  • Hm, roaming isnt set up for everyone automatically though, its based on your credit score, payment history and the contract you take out. Although i dont know a lot about these price hikes I dont use roaming
