Benefits being stopped.

My mother is apparently in receipt of benefits totalling around £400 a month which I presume is some type of illness or disability benefit. The DWP have apparently sent her communications about stopping her money which she relies on to get by day to day. My father is retired. She is 59 and my father is 64.She has been unable to work for many years since her diabestes lead to her becoming massively overweight. She has mobility issues and at some point has been in a wheelchair and has even had special trainers and shoes through the doctors. At one point she lost her sight from her medical conditions/complications. Surely they will not deem that she is a scrounger when she was blind at some point and clearly is unable to work.
The mortgage is paid but money is required for living expenses. I am afraid I cannot be much more detailed than this as I am stretching my memory as we are not in contact and this was all in a text sent to my flatmate. I am curious as to if benefits would be stopped in such a case where someone is clearly unable to work and has disabling physical conditions.

As you don't tell us why the benefit was stopped (there could be several different reasons), it is difficult for anybody to comment further.
What concerns me is that you are more curious rather than concerned for your mother.Gone ... or have I?0 -
sorry dmg that is all I know. My flatmate got a text that said words to the effect of dole are going to stop my money, we have no money coming in . we rely on this etc etc..
I am interested in the theory of why benefits for the genuinely disabled are ebing stopped when there are enough people milking the system . Without going into my personal history I am not incontact with my family through my own choice - should you require an explanation why i will be happy to pm you. I have had problems here with certain posters criticising me, my life and my relationships so will not be too willing to put it all on the board.
EDIT dmg I have tried to Pm you but your inbox is full..What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
You need to find out exactly what Benefit your mother was on and why it is stopped before other posters are able to give you advice and also before you deciding it is unfair.
It may have been replaced by other Benefits. It could have been stopped for many reasons, such as having too much income/savings or no longer fulfilling certain criteria. Until we know the situation, no one can comment further or make any judgement as to whether it is unfair.
If she is 59 is she about to go onto State Pension instead?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I agree with the above comment - why should people here try to give you information if you are not actually going to use it to help?
You're curious ? Why? So you can gloat about their misfortune?
I do not know what happened to make you break away from your family but if you don't feel you wish to help them (and that is your choice) then why spend your time asking for our comments? I know this seems harsh but I think you have unresolved issues and that is where you should invest your time.
Out of interest, why did your flatmate get the text?:hello:0 -

I was thinking exactly the same thing!
It's been mentioned before that there are various reasons why benefits would be stopping, how close are your parents to state pension age?
Again why do you need to know this information?0 -

No so as an English citizen who votes who would like to know how my taxes are being spent. TBH they hardly have misfortune anyway considering they are sitting on a considerable sum that was given to me by my grandparents which they seem to have no inclination to hand over..

I have a genuine interest in the benefits system and where it lets people down. As a person on benefits myself who faces a very real possibility of becoming homeless I am interested in any genuine cases where people are not in receipt of the help they deserve as English citizens and tax payers all their working lives.
I know this seems harsh but I think you have unresolved issues and that is where you should invest your time.
I have no issues unresolved. My decision to break off contact was my resolution for my upbringing.I have better things to do with my time than to waste anymore time on the past.
Out of interest, why did your flatmate get the text?
Because my family have always cared a lot more about them than me in the 10 years I have known them - sending them cards and gifts and being in contact while not doing same for me.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Maybe parents don't have OP's number/knew he would delete text without reading so sent to flatmate instead?
And OP never says they won't help - just that they aren't currently in contact. Maybe OP is trying to ascertain whether or not they are genuinely in need before getting involved with them again. That's how I read it anyway. Families can be very manipulative - my best mate's (estranged) mother got his brother to tell him she'd died of cancer and ask for money towards the funeral costs!!!
Everyone's so quick to leap to conclusions and judge on this board.0 -

Oops! Cross-posted
Well if the "considerable amount" they're sitting on is over £16k, they might not be entitled to benefits. (Talk about karma!)0 -

This could be why their Benefits have stopped?
If they are 59 and 64, they could be about to change to State Pension or Pension Credits. Retirement age at the moment is still 60 for women and 65 for men.
As I said before though, we can't give any firm advice without any details.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
