Is that a cental place then viewforth? so far I am considering a travelodge there seems to be 3- haymarket, leahmoth or west end - can someone local suggest which is the best location (most central or whatever) or I found a guest house on Queen street - is that the right sort of location? (I'm possibly being a bit paranoid and girly about being too far out and wandering round a city I don't know late at night)

    Queen Street is very central

There are 2 parts to Edinburgh - The new town and the old town (royal mile etc)
Queen Street is 2 streets behind Princes street (lots of shops)

Princes street is in the process of being dug up however for new tramlines. To say it's a mess is an understatement.

According to the BBC the mess on Princes St will be gone at the end of November in time for shopping season!

Travelodge locations... Times are for walking...

Central = reasonably central, in the Old town. The Cowgate (round the corner) is essentially student night club central so there'll be people around. Not quite so close if we end up going out in George St / New town. (~10-15 mins from New town, depending on where we are), ~7-10 mins from Waverly Train station. Website says "Check availability for 5th dec" so may be full that night...

West end = Quiet area, fairly central, just outside the edge of the New town. Not so close if we go out in the old town. Should be safe to walk there (~10-15 mins from Princes St, ~20+ mins depending on where in the old town). Not too far from Haymarket Train station.

Haymarket = About as far out as West end (~10-5 mins to New Town, 20-25 mins old town), quiet area. Close to the New Town. Really close to Haymarket station if you are getting a train that stops there. Very safe to walk back this way... I'll be stumbling back this direction too!

Learmonth = Closer to New town, ~10-15 mins walk. Should bo ok walking here too although may be quieter.

Shandwick Place = most central of all of them website says "Check availability for 5th dec" so may be full that night... Booooooooo!

Dreghorn, Musselburgh etc = outer mongolia :rotfl:

To be honest West end, Learmonth or Haymarket travelodges would be fine, there is not much in it distance wise or single person walking there safely. :rotfl: Its almost impossible to get a taxi in central Edinburgh on a Sat night near Xmas (unless you want to wait in massive queues for the next millenium ) so you'll have loads of company if you are walking! :rotfl: Haymarket travelodge will have the most people walking that direction I think as Haymarket is a large junction of roads if you're really worried.

Other locations for B and Bs etc... Queen street = VERY central! Viewforth (depending on which end as its a looooong street) isn't as central as some but would be ok if we're in the old town... Brunstfield end nicer than the fountainbridge end.

Princes street is where the German Market, stalls, "big" wheel, outdoor ice rink etc are based in December and also is the centre of town really... Apparently it'll be reopened to taxis/buses etc ~ end November (it and a lot of central edinburgh is a giant road building/digging up building site currently due to the Tram track laying/ building chaos. God only knows if it'll all be finished in time ).

George St, Queen St etc = New Town - many pubs around here and hotels/Band Bs on the outskirts of the area...
Royal Mile/Lawn Market/High Street etc = Old Town - loads of pubs and some (often more expensive) hotels, lots of old buildings and historic closes (lanes).

There are some hostels in the centre of town too (eg at Haymarket, shandwick Place and various ones in the old town) if you prefer that or a bunch of you want to share a larger room but I have no idea what any of them are like... I just pass the Haymarket and Shandwick pl ones going to work!
