!!!!!!?I hope you don't mind me saying so but this is ridiculus and unacceptable statement on so many levels that I don't even know where to start:rolleyes:.
Having a diet high in fat increases the probabilty that people will get heart disease. Would you post a comment on a diet thread that many people on that thread will die of heart problems! Likewise on an exercise thread? What about giving up smoking - smokers have increased their chances of dying of lung disease, why not pop over to the giving up smoking thread and remind them of that fact and see what sort of response you get?
Just for the record the biggest killers in the UK are heart disease, lung cancer and diabetes.
Posters on this thread don't post enough information about their drinking for you to make such a sweeping statement imho and even if they did I'm not sure a statement is helpful anyway. What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

I only came on to say good morning! I must agree with you shaggy. What I have decided is to be respectful of those who find this type of post helpful but ignore them myself. This is my compromise option (as opposed to trying to repond or leaving the thread ) but it really pi$$es me off when assumptions and generalisations are made on my behalf.:mad:0 -

Sorry mate, have to agree with Shaggy!
Everyone, I think, is aware that an excess of alcohol has its dangers and anyone drinking over the RDA COULD be at risk of doing some damage to themselves. But many of the people on this thread are drinking within the NHS guidelines for safe drinking. (Not me at the moment, obviously). Those that aren't know the dangers otherwise they wouldn't be here.
I have to say I do find the comment unhelpful and unnecessary.

Morning all. I've been trying to catch up, some wonderful posts in past couple of days which I could really relate to. BB thanks for all that you've said, and Fay - doing brilliantly in the face of so much provocation!
A couple of thoughts on GC's and related posts. I can't know what will happen to myself, let alone other folk on the thread. But I do know, as everyone on this thread does - or they wouldn't be here - that excess alcohol can cause serious harm and that it can sneak up on you. It's not just liver problems, it's increasing the risk of accidents, falls, heart disease, cancers, mental health problems, relationship problems etc.
The facts (from the British Liver Trust) are:
"But alcohol can cause harm. Each year in the UK 150,000 people are admitted to hospital and 22,000 people die prematurely due to alcohol related causes. That death toll works out as 400 people every day. The cost to society has been estimated at over £20 billion. It is a mistake to think that you have to be a heavy drinker to run into problems. Although it can take as long as 10 to 20 years, drinking just a bit more than you should over time can seriously harm your liver. Not feeling any side effects from drinking does not mean that you are not risking chronic ill-health or lasting liver damage from alcohol-related liver disease. Vast numbers of us now fall into this category."
Anyway, enough of the depressing info. It's a lovely sunny day here so very soon I will get out and enjoy it.
That's 16 for me Honeybear, and absolutely not intending to drink today either.0 -

I'm here because I want to save money. This is a money saving website, isn't it?
I joined this thread to save money not because I thiought my health was at risk. What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Shaggydoo
You are quite right - I often forget the moneysaving bit of this thread cos it's not why I'm doing it - SORRY:o
...and on the moneysaving aspect, news today that average alcohol sales in Scotland are the equivalent of 46 bottles of vodka a year per adult, which is not only a lot of alcohol (above the weekly limit for men) but also a lot of dosh.0 -

I have no problem with you saying that at all shaggydoo - discussion forums should have a large element of debate and differing views. As long as the points made are respectful and not personal, then I encourage that. So your post was totally fine.
I was just reiterating that alcoholism is a killer disease, and there are people that have posted on this thread that will die (or have much shorter lifespans) because of their drinking.
I am sure some heart disease, diabetes, and cancer deaths are connected to excessive drinking. However the death certificate would say "Heart Disease" only. Also, a fall down the stairs after a few drinks would be recorded as accidental death, and not mention alcohol.
Maybe not the majority, but I think there are many that will suffer ultimately through alcohol. Excessive weight, mental health problems, etc can all be exacerbated by alcohol. While it is an unsavoury thought, some of us will die through drink.
The difference between being alcoholic and addicted to smoking is that most smokers know they are addicted, and they know that smoking will kill them. If you asked many people on this thread if they will die through drink they would probably say no. One of the main symptoms of alcoholism is denial. People don't think they have a problem.
I do think that people sometimes post enough for me to make such sweeping statements. Some people can only do a few days AF a month, and carry on drinking even though they know there health is being affected. People who want to cut down dramatically or stop and find they cannot do it could be alcoholics.
Many post for a few days or weeks, and then go awol - now they may be absolutely fine and not want to post as they no longer have issues with alcohol, but some of them will be drinking more and more, and disappear.
Please remember this is my opinion only, and my opinion could well be wrong.
I know enough to know I don't know it all, and my opinion changes over time, so I may think this post is utter baloney in a few months. But it is what I feel is true today0
