I think that day will come eventually.

I was going to continue with something deep, philosophical and political but I won't. Months ago I decided not to get involved in arguments about AA, labelling, stereotyping etc. They made me angry and felt very cliquey. It was that or leave the thread.

Meanwhile, sorry to hear about your problems jo, we'll be here for you while you work it out in whichever way suits you best.

Hi to everyone else and welcome back shoppy.

We DO tend to get a bit carried away with our arguments. I do have to stop and think about what I've typed sometimes. Sometimes it all gets deleted and I start again!:o

  • Years ago I was working in a school where one of the teachers was a recovering alcoholic. He put the case forward that booze should not be served at the school fete and that booze should not be a prize in the tombola, ring a bottle stall etc. We all of course thought he was aa anal retard and should get over himself (sorry). But I have been thinking of him recently and I think he is right. It's not like a school would give away packets of fags as a prize is it.

I haven't been to an AA meeting and to be honest I probably wont. Having said that I have a couple of books I read and access the AA website online and think I understand the basis of the 12 step programme. I think there is a fair bit of help out there..google alcohol and drug advisory services...

I know I have changed, and boy was it well overdue, I knwo what triggered the change and maybe thats what everyone has to wait for...one defining moment when we say to ourselves 'Open your eyes, time to wake up, enough is enough is enough'...anyone remember that one!

Every new year you see television adverts for products to help you stop smoking. There's even an advert now where you can send off for a free NHS Quit Pack. For drinkers??? Zilch. And yet they're the ones likely to need the help in the new year after the christmas period. Makes me MAD!!

    Ok, I'm calm....I'm calm...

P.s I'm not having a go at people giving up smoking!

Good point, though most people who smoke are addicted to nicotine, and a much lesser percentage of people that drink are addicted to alcohol.
Also, what works for quitting booze? There is no replacement that I know of.

I think AA does work for some people but I read it only has about a 20-25% success rate and some alcoholics actually succeed better with quitting with absolutely no treatment at all. AA is just a support group at the end of the day so treating the problem with counselling, reduction or distraction techniques could also work I think.

It's hard really as this online support group has people at so many different stages and I think one approach won't work for everyone.

I'm happy to have you lovely folks to chat to though. I really feel like some people on here can identify with my struggle with alcohol.:A:T

Correct - as long as this threads helps AND people enjoy it, long may it continue

I would disagree. I think that most ARE addicted, but maybe to a lesser degree than with cigarettes

There's no replacement for cigarettes either. You have to adjust your mind to not 'want' either
