I'm surprised though that theres such a LACK of help for people. All you see in the news is things about youngsters binge drinking, the dangers of alcohol etc. All the drink adverts advise you to drink sensibly. Yet, when Jo goes to her Doctor he can do practically nothing to help! I suppose the organisation people automatically think of is AA but I'm sure there must be other groups / methods out there, they just aren't publicised very well

Completely agree Miss P. How bad does it have to get until there is the kind of help and support that smokers get......

I hope you follow cricket or you'll think I'm completely barking. Speaking of which, my little dog is 13 now but like a puppy in the snow!! He loves it! Better get off & do a spot of work.

My little puppy loves the snow too. He would stay outside all day if I would let him . Vey cute. He is in the " dog house" as he is biting ankles... the kids not mine.

Good to have you back WB.;)

Me too. I had no idea that there was so little help out there for people who want it.
What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

Every new year you see television adverts for products to help you stop smoking. There's even an advert now where you can send off for a free NHS Quit Pack. For drinkers??? Zilch. And yet they're the ones likely to need the help in the new year after the christmas period. Makes me MAD!!

    Ok, I'm calm....I'm calm...

P.s I'm not having a go at people giving up smoking!

Do you think that booze should be more expensive? Slap a massive tax on it to pay off the nation's debt?

I think AA does work for some people but I read it only has about a 20-25% success rate and some alcoholics actually succeed better with quitting with absolutely no treatment at all. AA is just a support group at the end of the day so treating the problem with counselling, reduction or distraction techniques could also work I think.

It's hard really as this online support group has people at so many different stages and I think one approach won't work for everyone.

I'm happy to have you lovely folks to chat to though. I really feel like some people on here can identify with my struggle with alcohol.:A:T

I think part of me WOULD, but then that doesn't help those that already fall into the "alcoholic" category. When you have to have a drink, it isn't going to matter how much it costs. Maybe it would cause them to reach rock bottom a lot lot quicker?

I know it would deter ME from drinking so much if it was a lot dearer. But thats just me. Why should those that DO drink sensibly be penalised because some of us can't?

I don't know, all very controversial and I'm sure there is no right or wrong answer.
