. I always thought I stayed in control of it. For me, that control was an illusion.

I have been AF now for 41 days & as time has gone on through the detox type headaches, groggy mornings, cravings that won`t go away ....I am realising more & more that I was`nt in control of my alcohol cravings at all either. I may have liked to convince myself that I could stop at one glass & put the rest of the bottle away...but I could not & its is only now that I am strong enough to really admit that to myself.

Of the many times I have tried to cut down & stop....now is different. Before I know I wanted to stop because of health, family, work etc.....but something happened this time & now I WANT to stop for ME.....& thats a whole different feeling & has somehow made total abstinence much more a life style change rather than something I should do because of other influences such as other people, health.wealth etc.

Feels like therapy session but this last month or so has been life changing & I wanted to share...yes still have bad days but I feel I can talk myself through it now.

Hope everyone is well. I shall be off onto the moors walking part of the Pennine Way today....6 miles I hope.

Morning all - brrr! Frost! Ice! Beautiful day though.

    AF Thursday here.....determined.

Reading the debate between Fay & GC was v interesting....I suppose I could be accused of flippancy on occasion :D  but that should not be confused with a flippant approach to the problem.......I wouldn't be on here if I didn't take it seriously, I just find it impossible to be serious for more than 3 seconds at a time.

And that was it - time's up.

    See you later!

Hi Winebox....good to see you back.

Hmmm it was an interesting debate fay & GC....very thought provoking. That is a very good thing as it certainly makes us look at ourselves & reinforces our resolve to keep plugging away.

    Happy AF Thursday !

    See you all later.
  • Just caught up on past couple of pages, very interesting reading.

One of the presenters on BBC Radio Scotland has set himself a challenge not to drink for 30 days (he has a drink room rather than a drink cupboard!!!). Why 30 days? Well, he'd heard, from an organisation that promotes moderate drinking, that if you can't manage 30 days without drink you wouldn't manage moderate drinking.

That was an interesting thought for me and really chimes with my own experience ( decades trying to drink moderately and always failing sooner or later, turned out it was easier for me to stop completely, as I now see I am too addicted to do the moderate thing).

....but tonight I find myself rather stridently sticking up for the right to be flippant. (sorry! X)

Avoided responding last night and not sure I should be now BUT
    • I respect and understand that some of my friends on here have serious problems with alcohol and are using this thread to help them.
    • I (on the other hand) have developed a habit of drinking alcohol every night which is not good for my waistline or wallet. It is not a serious problem it is a habit which I have decided to break. I don't think this means I am deluding myself but if anyone thinks that I am then **** (insert what you like, adding asterisks as needed).
    • If wearing PJs, eating/drinking chocolate, books, bubble baths, walking, cycling, climbing up walls, wrestling with goats etc etc helps then why not do it? However, talking about it may be considered flippant.
I have learned not to let it wind me up but every now and again I slip up (suppose that means I must have an addiction:p)

Have a good day everyone, I am going to have a seriously AF Thursday.
  • Well said Maman! How come folks say things much better than moi?

    Morning all :coffee:

That was interesting reading from all sides. For me the value of this thread that we all are approaching dealing with AF-ness (as I like to call it) in different ways.

I certainly wasn't managing my AFDs the way I wanted to over the last couple of years & now I am again, thanks to posting on here & the support (seriously, flippantly & in all ways) that I get, & I really appreciate it :T

I also like the fact I can be candid about how much I drink on here & not get judged or have people "disappointed" with me (horrible kick in the teeth that has happened to me & made me instantly want another a glass of wine!)

Anyway, I poured what was left of glass of wine down the sink this morning, & made ice-cubes out of what was left in the bottle :D

I'm aiming for an AF Thursday too :)
