Lokolo I really admire you and you write some very sensible posts. :A

What age are you? I think you're about 20 am I right?

Did your mum not do all your forms for you then ??

I wish my sons were not so lazy and became more motivated to complete job applications and do their cvs...

    Yep I'm 20.

My mum has never filled in any forms for me

I had 2 jobs by time I was 17 of which I applied myself (though recommendations by friends).

My mum sometimes checks over my covering letter as well as my step dad as hes quite good at that sort of thing.

I haven't had pocket money in alongtime, but mum does pay for some clothes such as when I am starting a new job :D but thats about it. I currently living away from home and pay all my bills, rent and food out of my own money.

  • As it is, I spent most of my young adult life skint, which was a great help in many ways, as it pushed me to go for opportunities which in reality, scared me to death, but I needed the money, so I pushed myself. Please do not let your lad sell himself short because he can - needing money can be a great motivator!

This is extremely true and excellent advice. Money is such a motivator. I'm 23 and have worked since I was 14, mainly because I wanted the money. I now have a career I love and am proud of. The desire to achieve and develop is a strong motivator, but the idea of getting a pay rise and climbing the ladder is an even stronger one! I think this is common amongst young graduates who struggled through uni with little or no spare money, living on basic food and the likes. Your first proper pay cheque is amazing! :)

I worked in catering for over 6 years and it was my only job so when it was time to move on, i needed to bulk out my CV a bit with all the skills i'd learned in one job.

I have since updated the text and had other jobs so have cut it right down, but i found a draft copy of waffle i wrote for it, see below.
I work in the catering and bar areas of the hotel, where I have acquired many skills which I would look forward to using in further employment. I have held my current position for six years. During that time I have led large teams successfully through important and varied challenges. My position is very customer focused and requires me to do everything from dealing with telephone enquiries, right through to customer based briefings and complaint handling.

In my time with the company, I have proven on many occasions that I am equally adept at working as part of a team, or on my own using my initiative. I am regularly required to anticipate the needs of dozens of customers at any one time. This requires me to show high levels of multi tasking, delegating and job prioritization. It also shows I have an eye for detail and the ability to think on my feet.

    My current duties include:
Ÿ dealing with orders and requests from guests in all areas of the hotel,
Ÿ transferring this information to the relevant teams,
Ÿ ensuring the requests are dealt with in a timely fashion and ensuring the customers are satisfied,
Ÿ working in the restaurant and bars, which includes silver service,
    Ÿ cash handling,
Ÿ supervising private functions and acting as toastmaster and team leader during weddings,
Ÿ drafting a rota for the 40+ staff,
Ÿ handling telephone calls, which include bookings and enquiries.

  • Booklover - whilst I am sure your sons confidence and qualifications have suffered from him being ill, please do not let him 'off the hook' for ever as a result - I have worked with young people with cancer, who have been more pro-active and conscientious about their future carrer prospects than your lad is being at the moment.

However, this is not to belittle the very real effects that his illness and depression can have, it must have been hard for him, but maybe achieving some goals for himself, not for you will help him develop his self esteem and move forwards. However, I think he needs to feel he is doing it off his own bat, not being manipulated by his mum...

I suggest you gently explain that you cannot afford to support him to the extent you have been able to (maybe use the recession as an excuse here so he does not realise the strategy you are implementing!) , so spending money will be drying up, and will of course help him put together job applications if he wants you to...but that it is up to him to do the legwork...

I work with young people, and have done for years, mainly around personal and social development, and I am sorry to say, you are helping a bit too much, which is actually disempowering him... I know you are doing it from love and concern for him, but he needs to find his own way and will derive more pride from what he does if he makes his own achievements.

He is clearly able to achieve things on his own, and his voluntary work stands him in good stead for finding paid emplyment, however, in the current ecenomic climate he will have to be realistic and expect a few knock backs. You never know, he may relish the challenge once he gets going, and if he does secure some paid employment, it really will be something to be proud of!
