thanks lokolo for that, you are brilliant. but I'm disappointed can i not use what Ive done?e . its nearly 3 pages and it all sounds really good. I think he should get the job!

Now i have another 6 job applications to do for him tomorrow!! ................lol oh what joy.

    Fiona

    i hate job applications

    How ill is he?
He really needs to have a least a lot of his own input to these as it is him, hopefully, going to be interviewed.

    Ha excuses excuses.

Ok, I am in bed at the moment so sorry there are a few word errors!

    C.V.

    - Start off with name and address. I have date of birth also but this doesn't matter as employers cannot take this into consideration.
    - I have contact details below this.

So first part of my C.V. looks a bit like this-
    Curriculum Vitae

    Name: Lokolo

    Date of Birth: 07/10/1988

    Address: X
    X
    X
    X

    Phone: 01xxxxxx
    Mobile: 07xxxxxx
    Email: lokolo@....

The above is aligned uo so that my actual name, address and DOB are together.
    - I then have Qualifcations as my next section

Degree: Currently studying for a BSc etc.

    A Levels: Computing A
    Business B
    Maths C

    AS Leves: Physics C
    Critical Thinking D

    GCSEs: 11 (8 A*-Cs) including English (B), Maths (A) and Physics (A)

    - I have included Physics in mine as areas of which I apply for jobs are particularly interested in these areas.

    - Next section is Hobbies and Interests, but if I were your son I would have another heading of Extra Cirricular Activies, as it seems as though he has done a couple. Maybe give a 'detailed' (not too long) description of the Princes Trust thing and what he actually did
    - In my hobbies and interests section I have an number of paragraphs, of which one is:

I am also a regular contributor to an online forums called moneysavingexpert.com on personal finance, mainly in areas of savings and investments.

    - Final section is Employment and references, from the thing you posted it says hes had a job, maybe working in some sort of shop. What you said was silly, as you said hes done this and this, but not said where he worked, for example

Now to me, I would think o..k.. that would be useful if I knew where he worked, and how he ensured they had a postive and enjoyable shopping experience.

    - Ok and thats the majority of the C.V. done

Please do not copy straight word for word! And please do not do this yourself! Get your son to do it!
I know you want to help him but the best way to get a job is for the person who wants the job to know his C.V. inside and out, the best way to do this is to write it yourself.

    Covering Letter

This I'm not so good at ;)

Make it professional, have your address top right, then below this on the left have the employers address.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

A paragraph explaining the job you want to apply for, not to long, a couple of sentences maybe.

Why you want the job paragraph.

Why you would be good for the job paragraph.

    Yours faithfully,

    BLAH.

Ok sorry its long. I do hope this is helpful! But again, I stress, do not copy word for word, although I will say my C.V. and covering letters have not failed me yet.

And just to say I have a special power where I am able to make sure he doesn't get the job if he copies word for word.:cool::cool:

ALSO, if he does it himself theres nothing wrong with your proof reading it or us proof readin it. Oldernotwiser is a super dooper careers advisor so she's pretty top notch and this!

Well, thanks for the compliment, kind sir!

Can I just say that you've described a very traditional chronological CV which may not be ideally suited for someone in the OP's son's position. This format may have worked OK for you up to now but I'd seriously consider doing yours as a skills based CV when you start your proper career - chronological CVs are a bit old hat and not particularly appropriate for young graduates. (I know you'll take this advice in the spirit that it's offered.)

Sleep tight - you youngsters have no stamina!

Yes my C.V. is a little out of date, I shall be editing that when I have time ;) thanks!

And :eek::eek: I struggle to get up at 8 in the mornings!!!! 9-5 jobs suck.

Try and get him to do the forms with your help. Be better for him and at least he will have had some input
  • Lokolo I really admire you and you write some very sensible posts. :A

What age are you? I think you're about 20 am I right?

Did your mum not do all your forms for you then ??

I wish my sons were not so lazy and became more motivated to complete job applications and do their cvs...

    Fiona
  • i reallu feel that if he doies the forms on his own that he will have very litle chance of even getting called for interviewe.

with my help all we are getting these last few months is rejections after rejection....

the job situation here in Belfast is terrible, maybe 100 people or more applying for 1 post...
  • thanks Julie i will definitely try that tomorrow, here's hoping.

its just that he is so used to me doing everything for him...
