Keep your recorded voicemail messages short

Why you may ask?

Calling mobiles is the most expensive type of common UK call. Many people have long answerphone messages, and include a 'leave your message after the tone' though the same info's repeated by the automatic announcement.

So what am I asking?

So let's save each other money; here's a wee plea to please keep your messages short.

I've always done this because I find it so infuriating myself to call someone and have to listen to their long winded reply when it's my money being thrown down the drain!

My message simply says: "Please leave a message or phone later. Thanks".

Short and sweet - easy! :)

I've had lots of people comment on how short the message is and have altered their message accordingly. :).

I have read somewhere on MSE that you can press the # button when the message starts and it allows you to record your message straight away without having to listen all of recorded message. But I know the # thing does not work if you are calling someone on t-mobile, it takes you to their mailbox and asks for the voicemail pin!!

That's the way it works on several networks, so I wouldn't try.

Mine are still on the standard announcement; maybe I'm lazy. The foreign ones are switched off except the one that goes to an email attachment

My recorded message is simply "Charlie's voicemail". This is followed by the default beep which is enough for anyone to realise it's on voicemail :)

I used to have it as just "voicemail" but I found that people are more likely to leave a message when they know that they have got through to the right person.

The default message goes on for way too long. Sneaky, crafty phone companies!

What would be good is if the networks would remove that automated bit which says, "if you want to re-record, change, delete, blah blah blah..."
surely that's of NO use to anyone to listen to?!

Except to the networks, who earn a nice "cut" of the money spent phoning them

The o2 standard one really riles me:

"Welcome to the o2 voicemail messaging service for 0..........7.........7......" etc with ages between each number, grr!

If you press "0" while the message is playing on Vodafone its skips the message and allows you to leave your message right away.

It does work I use this all the time as our whole company use Vodafone.

mine just says 'leave me a message and i'll call you back if i can be bothered'

That message with 'press 1 to re-record your message' got my mum in a tizz once. I dialed my voicemail to hear a message off my mum saying 'i'm sorry i can't take your call at the moment but if you'd like to leave me a message i'll call you back shortly'. Being a few carrots short of a rabbits lunch she thought it meant that she could re-record MY message by pressing 1.
