ETA - I also commute to work and cannot for the life of me keep my eyes open on the train, so I get an extra 45-55 mins then (each way) too.

I do the same as you with the commute and I always fall asleep on the train however I normally in bed for 11.30pm as I have to be up for 6.30am and I don't get back home until 7pm.

What I found help was having my shower at night and reading in bed to relax me rather then being sat watching TV or at the computer. That plus smaller meals in the day.

    Bowl of Cornflakes
A piece of fruit on the train
    A yoget at 1st break 11am
    Lunch - salad
    Fruit in the afternoon
    Dinner at home

Also to stay awake on the train I've taken to reading thriller books to keep my mind working but hell I love the extra 1hour I get on the train!

  • Sleeping a lot and feeling tired no matter how much you sleep can be a symptom of depression. Everything OK there OP?
  • What about your iron levels, I have suffered from aneamia a fair few times in the past, and the tiredness I felt then was only rivalled by pregnancy tiredness, where you could literally fall asleep standing up.

The best thing for it is floradix, it is a natural iron supplement so is quickly and easily absorbed by the body, and doesn't have the unpleasant side effects of standard iron tablets. If you need it though don't take the liquid, find the tablets- seriously!
  • it's worth going back to your GP - another set of bloods might be in order if it's been a long time and with the family history of sleep apnoea it's worth mentioning - i don't know if it's hereditary but a doctor would be the way to go....

different people do just need different amounts of sleep though... i'm rubbish with less than 7 hours but some people at work are perky after 6!

do you get much exercise? that may help with general energy levels (also with the mild depression suggestion as well). a good multivitamin could never do any harm either, in case you are low in a few.

  • I've read recently that for every hour awake, you require half an hours sleep to recover.
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)
  • I've been a bit of am insomniac since I was 16. On a good night now I get 5-6hrs, but about once a week I get nothing. I have learnt to 'rest' which is nearly as good, but at the moment I am just tossing and turning for about 5hrs a night and getting up more shattered than I go to bed!

sorry to derail this thread but where can you get Floradix? health food shops? Boots?
My tiredness is probably mostly from kids, disrupted sleep and 6am wake up calls BUT I suspect that due to "womens things" (as my H would put it) I could possibly be slightly anaemic. I have iron tablets left over from pregnancy but I really don't want to take them for obvious reasons :o
I can't be arsed to go to Dr's as its such a pain trying to go when the fleabotomist (sp?) is there with 2 kids in tow or it's a trip to local hospital to get bloods taken there.

Sorry waffled on a bit there :o

OP are you getting quality sleep? Or do you find yourself waking a great deal during the night?

  • I have about 7 hours...but then a couple of hours when I get in from work in the afternoon!
Really wish I had more energy...but just so tired at the moment!
;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)

Thanks. I'm fine happy-wise! A couple of years ago I was really stressed at work and went to the docs for being so knackered and she asked me "How do you feel in yourself?" and I just burst into tears - she took my blood pressure and put it down to stress. Which I agreed with.

I'm not stressed now, I'm happier than I've ever been in work, life and love :) ... Just cannot get out of this lethargy.
