    Thank you all.

I think I am going to get one. I am thinking of using it under opened window when I use it (it cannot smell more then when I deep fry in a saucepan) and just make sure I change oil often.

Tweenitat would you mind telling me which one have you got?

After years of refusing to have one because I thought they smelled I gave in and bought one from Argos.

It's a lovely fryer, not too big but can comfortably cook enough chips for 3 (greedy) people. Best of all I've got no complaints about the smell at all, I have it next to an open window and when you're actually frying you don't have the lid on so it's no different to using a pan (much safer though). When it's cooling you put the lid on and there's no smell.

This is the one I've got, only £17.49 and it comes apart completely so it's simple to wash up.

I am married to a Belgian and chips with mayonnaise are part of their culture!! I never had a frier before and didnt really want to get one but we did, bought it when we were in Belgium one year and its great. But how to get over the problem of the smell..........I put the frier on the table outside of the kitchen door!! Means we only get chips when the weather is dry but to be honest a couple of times a year is fine by me!!

  • I hate our deep fat fryer and try to avoid using it but DH throws chips and onion rings in it which really annoys me as it ruins the oil and makes it stink. The smell goes all over the house and takes ages to go. I have it next to an open window but it makes no difference to the smell. Mind you it is way overdue for an oil change but I refuse to do it as it's a messy job and I'm not the one who uses it! Then I've got the problem of where to put a huge pot of oil which usually ends up sitting around for months until we go to the tip!

We used to have one, but didn't use it very much, so I don't think I eat chips more when I have one. I never found it smelly, as long as the oil was changed reasonably regularly. Since moving house, we only have a single oven, and it means that when we occasionally want oven chips with something else that goes in the oven, we can only do them at one temperature and the chips are rubbish.

We are going to buy one shortly (going for the Breville Easy Clean Deluxe) so that hopefully it will be easier to clean that older models. It won't make me eat more chips than normal, but gives me more options and better, crisper chips. My parents have always had one, and it doesn't smell.
