Deep frier

Hi,
I would like to purchase deep frier, but my OH says there is no way as it smells.
I love deep fried mushrooms and deep fried caulliflower and shnitzels (so does my OH), but find that deep frying it in the pan wastes oil and also it takes forever... Because by the time you fry first load the loose crumbs starts to burn and you cannot re-use the oil by the time you are finished.
My father always deep fried in deep frier, but as he is a chef and I grew up in a restaurants I never actually experienced deep frier in small area...
Is it true that all deep friers smell once you use them or is it just that I have to buy more expensive one with some self-cleaning systems like microwave ovens have? Or how do you deal with the smell?
Thank you

Ours is used on the stove top under the extractor fan.
Do not find it a problem.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I've never had one myself, but an ex used to have one and it used to make my clothes smell so I'd never get one. (Apart from the health issues)
can you pass the old through a seive as they do use an awful lot of oil!0 -
For what it costs we change the oil quite frequently.
At the moment we are using Beef Dripping (What a way to go)I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I used to have one but I agree it does smell in a confined space, I used to have to shut the kitchen door and open all the windows each time and it took a few days for the smell to disappear. I also used to end up have chips etc way too often and piled on tonnes of weight.
I refused to buy one when we moved into our flat but have now got a tefal actifry which is brill and does not smell (and is low fat) - but to be honest I only cook chips in it so I am not sure whether you could do mushrooms etc in it or not.0 -

Thank you very much for that. Could you please find out the model you have for me?
The only thing you have to be carefull about when frying is cheese-more often then not the breadcrumbs are not able to hold the cheese and it will almost always burst open and then you can just throw the oil away. And have no dinner:rotfl:So I am not worried about frying mushrooms in it.
I understand it will smell WHILE I cook - but it smells when I am cooking in a pan as well. I also open window when I cook.
I think husband is worried about smell while it is not used.
To pass the oil from saucepan through cif - of course I can and sometimes I do, but once you burn something in the oil the oil is useless.0 -
cooking oil when heated becomes carcinogenic i myself wouldnt use it more than once, also i think with a deep fat fryer there is more of a temptation to deep fry everything since your using it anyway.
i know my sister does the kids sausages, nuggets as well as their chips in her's, save's on the washing up.
Id rather keep the deep fat fried stuff as a takeout treat.0 -
There is a Tefal one that only uses about a teaspon of oil. It's quite expensive, about £150 last time I priced it up, but may have come down since then as i think that was last Christmas.
I don't know if it smells and I don't know if the food tastes right out of it, but maybe someone will be along in a minute to comment on that.0 -

No, sorry, nothing more disgusting then take out deep fried food...
I believe there might be a temptation if you are a busy mum, but A/we don't have children B/My OH wouldn't even considered eating deep fried sausage.. Also disgusting.0 -

I've just been reading about this one on Which, but unfortunately the Watchdog completely slated it for being unsafe.. Pitty that.0 -
The Tefal Actifry is the one which uses only a very little oil - the one that you will have read about in Which Magazine. There have been lots of instances of them catching fire I believe and a few people have told me that they seem very 'cheap' with plastic bits which break quite easily (not good considering the retail price).
Shame, 'cos I would have liked one myselfI let my mind wander and it never came back!0
