Stick them in a couple of comparison sites an view the results , it's up to you if you want to change or not, if you do see if your chosen provider is on any cashback sites and switch through them.

  • The worst thing you can do is to put a single quarterly usage unit amount into a comparison calculator. For instance, you use a lot less heating fuel in summer than winter. Entering your summer quarter details and extrapolating out to a year would give a projection for usage much lower than your actual projected usage. This would give you a very inaccurate comparison.

Bills from a year ago or even speaking to your current supplier to get those figures is the way to go.

If you don't have those, then you have to project what your annual figure will be. For me, I'm on economy 7 (though I could easily move to a one tariff supply if cheaper) but I've only been here for 4 months (previously abroad where aircon was the electric killer, not heating !).

I know my current usage is fairly stable with my hot water being heated overnight and my daytime usage being fairly stable over time. I don't see the current figures changing with the seasons, except for the addition of heating.

I have 2 storage heaters which I will put on to store heat during the cheaper nightime hours (other heaters are air blow non retention heaters). To work out how much that will cost is easy. If their power consumption is 1kw and 2kw then I am using 3kw or 3 units for every hour I have them on.

If overnight power costs are 5p per unit, then it costs me 3*5p or 15p per hour and the economy 7 runs for 7 hours a day so my daily cost is 7*15p or £1.05 a day. It will actually be a little less than this because they may reach "fully charged" and would then just need a trickle of energy to maintain that full charge.

An additional cost would be if you used any of the hot air heaters as a boost, which I suspect I will have to in winter.

So, to come back to your units estimate, if you were using the 3 units a day and had the heating on for 4 months a year, then your heating units would be 4*30*3*7 (4 months, 30 days, 3 units an hour, 7 hours a day) which come to a total of 2,520. You would have to add that to any total obtained solely from summer usage. You could obviously divide the 2520 by 4 and add that 630 units to a quarterly usage.

If you have any other items which will significantly increase your consumption, then do the same with them.

Finally, when you have put in your estimates, do it again with usage estimates up to 25% more or less to see what would happen if you used less or used more. What you want is a good all round provider, not just the supplier who is only good for an exact amount of electric you need.

I don't currently use gas but it is a similar exercise.

Totally agreed. Southern electric's new tariff also has a £40 joining bonus which you have to take into account. You can see this on http://www.uswitch.com Others definitely have potential cashbacks on some of the cashback websites but remember, these are not guaranteed.

I'm also deciding between fix online v3 and saveonline as my v15 capped plan finishes at the end of September.

Unit costs are the same but v3 has an additional 3% discount making it for me about £40 a year cheaper.

But will unit prices come down in the next year ? Today energy companies say no and ofgem say they should but who knows ?

I've just had a conversation with Eon and the Fixedonline v3 works out 67p per month more than v15 capped for duel fuel. I could move to Scottish Power and save £1.10 per month (plus £62 quidco) but I don't think it's worth if for the hasstle and not knowing how good they are factor. Eon are very good (Cust services, and on here too so they care!)....

Edit - Just read SP give £90 quidco now, hmmm this is slightly tempting now...

I'll give you credit with Ovo as being only 12.2% over your prices when I factored in your 13.4% and 6% discounts but with yesterday's new tariff from Southern Electric (Go Direct), you are 28% over.

    Hi property.advert,

I've been looking at a range of comparison websites and using my location and some fictional usage and I am unable to find a saving with Southern Electric anywhere near 28%.

It maybe I have inputted something incorrectly or there is a large difference from area to area, I can re check this if you can tell me the area you live in and maybe a rough idea of your annual usage.

I'm intrigued to see if I can identify such a saving, as I feel that 28% is extremely high when comparing like for like.

Let me know wat you think, I look forward to investigating this some more.

    Hi 20vt-rs

Just a quick heads up. We don't give discount on the final bill when you change supplier. Therefore, you need to time a move to keep the impact of this to a minimum.

Also, it can take between 4 and 8 weeks for a transfer to complete. You might want to consider going on to another of our tariffs during this period.

All our capped products carry a premium above standard rates which initially make them more expensive than other tariffs. At the moment we have cheaper options available. These are listed on our website or the comparison sites. Alternatively, give us a call.

Make sure you choose one without a cancellation fee.

I am in the process of switching to eon how do i know which plans have cancellation fees? thank you.

    Hi Auntycaz

The only products currently available with cancellation fees are Fixonline 3, Energy Saver 9 and Energy Discount 4. This applies to both the dual fuel and electricity only versions.

There are no exit fees on any other products but don't forget about no discount on final bills should you change supplier.

Hope this helps. Give me a shout if you need any more info. :)
