Wouldn't wine in a box go off if it's left open after a few days?

....and that is a serious question ;)

  • How weird. I have four bottles of wine on the sideboard behind me, they are covered in dust and will probably sit there for another year...... and yes I do drink wine sometimes. I'd much prefer a piece of cake though.

Wine boxes are vacuum packed and designed so that they reseal after you close the tap without letting any air in, so they last longer than open bottles where the air affects the wine. In theory it will last as long as it would in an unopened bottle (i.e. eventually it will be past its best anyway).

You can buy fruit juice like this (at least, I can at my local farmers' market!) which means that you can have a box of juice in the fridge (or out on the side for that matter) for a couple of months without it going off. There's still a use-by date, but this applies whether it's opened or not!

D'you know, I've actually NEVER liked cake?? I'm not a fussy eater, so if I'm given cake I'll eat it, but nope, not a fan. I'm strange in that I truely LOVE healthy food, and ideally plain food (except curry which I adore) but if its sticky or gooey or cheesy or whatever, I'd prefer to give it a miss. And when I have a meal, I never put veg on the same fork as my 'main' - always one or the other. Am I totally wierd???

You must be weird not to like cake !!!! ;)

I think we are all weird in our own way. It amazes me that the foods my husband loves are things I really dislike and vice versa.

By the way I liked your original meal plan of lots of pulses and veggies. I think it would be possible to live like that but I would definitely add more CAKE instead of wine !! :rotfl::rotfl:

Seriously, maybe make the wine (or cake!) a once a month or once a fortnight treat initially, until you have your budget working out satisfactorily.
Good luck with the JSA application when you feel ready, it can't be much fun.

You're not weird at all or if you are, I am too! When my SIL died five years ago and we cleared out her house there were a couple of hundred bottles of wine sitting in the cupboard under thge stairs. She was a bit of a wine snob so it was presumably good stuff, but her ex was teetotal, Hubby prefers beer and I barely drink at all. We ended up giving anyone she knew that came near the house a mixed half dozen bottles ...and we still seem to have a ridiculous amount in the cupboard, going quietly off. I feel guilty every time I grab some venerable looking bottle then slug half of it into the bolognaise....

Now if it had been a cupboard full of chocolate...!!!!!!

  • Someone should do a poll...
if you had a spare £3 would you spend it on wine, cake or chocolate?....anything else that should go on the list?

Well if I were trying to live on £10 per week for food I'd probably spend it on a few extra rations, tbh. But a small bar of Galaxy might creep in there somewhere, yup.

I did the maths recently, too, to see if it was possible to eat a reasonable diet on JSA, and I worked out that it is ;) I work in CAB, so look at these figures weekly, helping clients wiht their budget.

    Penny. x

I wish I knew how?

If I was on benefits and if I lived alone (neither are the case now, but that held true when I last did the maths): Out of £260 a month JSA would go £60 for council tax, £110 for service charges, £20 ground rent and buildings insurance, £34 electricity, £20 water ... which leaves £16 for a month's food, public transport and everything else.
