Personally I would wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows. Something like this happened to me, this is what I had to do.0

will it lose all my photos (really sentimental and i cant lose them)and emails though?
Is it simple to do? This is what he did (took him 2 and a half hours but after the computer colour couldnt be changed from 16 bit and the keyboard went american and now this problem. He is a real whizz kid so im worried that if he stuffed up the reistallation i have no hope!0 -
There is advice on microsoft's site here about this error. It doesn't seem to suggest doing anything as drastic as a full reinstall unless the two other options fail. Why don't you get the person who you paid to come out again and do a proper job?Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

MS products are built to work as installed. If something goes wrong, some tinkering can fix these problems. Lots of tinkering tends to really stuff them up. ME is an awful OS. I would suggest that you back up your email/email address book, contacts, personal data and photographs. Blat your HD and invest in a newer OS, like XP. Its a lot better than ME.HKP
Who is this super hero? Sarge? ...No. Rosemary, the telephone operator? ...No. Penry, the mild-mannered janitor? ...Could be!0 -

That is the sort of response that a telephone help desk gives as a "cure all" type solution to fix all sorts of problems! i.e. they have not got sufficient technical knowledge to talk you though how to fix the problem.
I have never found it necessary to format and re-install the operating system to fix any problem over many years.
Search on the net and you will find that someone somewhere will have had a similar problem.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I think either way you'll most likely have to do a recovery, or reinstall. Explorer.exe is central to the windows kernel and is not the kind of thing you want throwing errors. I'd imagine it to be quite tricky to fix manually."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

Thanks everyone thats great(i see the thanks buttons are still missing), i'll give it a go the msn site looks like something i could manage. Any ideas of a way to do it if absoloutly everything i press brings up this message(cant even shut down)... thus i am using a different computer to get info on how to cure it.0

Last time I did it both explorer.exe and drag.exe (which is the program that moves files between folders in windows) had become corrupted somehow and it would of taken me longer to fix it than it would backing everything up and reinstalling. Thats why I suggested it, as I can restore my computer in less than an hour, I just backup my files. Turn off computer, use Dell Restore, done! Takes about 2 hours to reinstall important software and the rest can be installed when required or when I have time, or can be bothered. I never went into detail because I was in the middle of an ICT lesson when I posted.0 -

explorer.exe is not Internet Explorer, it is the program that is used to view, rename, delete, open, etc files in windows.0
