Just found out we're pregnant...

Massive, massive surprise, although Hubby and I are very happy.

He's on cloud nine - I'm feeling nervous, apprehensive, etc!

Need to start taking some vitamins/folic acid, etc and found "Pregnacare" - about £12 for three months worth.

Does anyone else have any recommendations? We're happy to pay this, if we have to, but obviously now need to try and save as much money as physically possible!!

Thanks in advance
Jen

If you're eating healthy, you really only need to take folic acid - I think they are just a couple pounds for a few months supply. And you will only need to take them through 13 or 14wks. Folic acid is very important to take, so it's probably best (IMO) to take it as a supplement, rather than just rely on diet, as you never know with morning sickness if you'll be able to eat enough food containing it (or keep it all down LOL). The only other supplement I took was iron, as I'm anaemic. But as far as regular vitamins, just eat healthy and you'll be fine.

    Congratulations!!

  • Congrtulations!!!

You can pick up very cheap own brand folic acid from pharmacies/ supermarkets for pence.

I am now 33 weeks pregnant and have started taking Tesco's version of pregnacare at about half the price!!! There is no need to pay a premium for branded medication.

Also, as others have said you can ask for folic acid or iron (later on in preg if you are told you need a supplement) on prescription so free!!! A healthy diet is paramount (ie. you shouldn't rely on supplements) and you will get the health in pregnancy grant (£190) after 20 weeks which is meant to be spent on healthy eating.

    Best wishes!

  • In the early weeks I could only stomach Folic Acid on its own as they are tiny, where as the Pregnacare type supplements are huge!

It really depends on your diet, but I did take the Boots own pregnancy vits for a while. They're quite good as they contain ginger which helps with nausea. They're quite often on 3 for 2.

Folic acid only really works if you take it 3 months before conception as the babys spine develops so early in pregnancy.

It is beneficial to take folic acid as soon as you find out. Up to 12 weeks pregnant.

From your post it gives the impression there's no point taking it if you didn't plan the baby!

  • Make sure to take folic acid upto and including week twelve of your pregnancy as a supplement.

    Many congratulations!
  • Well done and Congratulations :j
You must start the folic acid NOW.
Generally, its a good idea to take it as soon as you start to try for a baby to try to ensure you get the 3 months worth in beforehand.
Just buy a small pot from superdrug/boots you Doctor will write a prescription for the rest. Mine even rung me up to tell me he was doing so!

    Hi Everyone

    Thanks for your replies!

We've been to asda and bought Asda pregnancy tablets, two for £4 which is half the price of the Pregnacare one.

Collected a couple of pregancy books from a close friend with a 14 week old. Other than hubby, she and her hubby are the only ones who know. I'm a little unsure about when to tell my mom?

It's our first pregnancy, so I'm bound to have loads of questions! I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to big stuff like this, and tend to research like mad. So, off to have a look at the pregnancy thread and join!

    Thanks again.
