Accepting refurbished phone?

Hi

My 4 month old Nokia 5800 has been playing up over the last month and O2 have agreed it is faulty and to return it to them for replacement. I have just received an email confirming this but it states they will replace it with a refurbished handset.

I was expecting a new handset not a refurbished one, am I within my rights to ask for a new one??

Thanks

Sue

  • This is normal practice with all networks. Refurbished handsets are usually the ones that have been returned under the customer service guarantee, so it will be newer than the faulty handset you're sending back to them.

I believe within 28 days you can expect a new replacement, but after that it would be a repaired or refurbished unit.

I might be refurbished but some people fail to realise it's only the inside of the phone which is. The outisde casing due to H&S has to be brand new. The phone is stringently tested too and comes with a warranty for three months (well it does where I work anyway!)

I should expect more than 3 months warranty when the phone is only 4 months old! The original 2 year warranty still stands even on the replacement. I've had refurbished phones where the outer material was clearly used as it had scratches and marks.

Sorry I should rephrase that. You get an additional three months warranty with the network I work for. Manufacturers warranty still stands wether it be 12/18/24 months.
  • More and ,more we as customers are seeing our rights eroding. It may be common practice in the industry but that does not make it right. If you had bought a fridge and it went wrong after three months would you accept a recon as a replacement? Anyone who accepts this practice just makes it harder for others.

What does "refurbished" mean (in any real sense)?
For me, it's just a fancy word for "used".

In effect, refurbished phones are luck of the draw. Some are brand new phones with the tiniest faults which are fixed easily and the phone is as good as new (perhaps only being a day older than a new 1!) and others slightly older (but never very old!).
In this sense I can see why you would want a replacement phone but don't knock buying refurbished stuff on the head anyone, especially very expensive stuff, saves alot of money and there should not be any difference in quality and you have alot of rights!

  • i wouldnt mind as long as it looked good and worked well

  • i wouldn't be accepting anything else than a brand new handset!!

surley u wouldn't accept a refurbished tv, laptop, washing machine etc... after only 4 months of having a new one??
If your lucky enough to be irish, your lucky enough ;)
