I have a metal pill box, which looks silver but I am not sure, which needs cleaning and I don't know what to use. There is a pattern on it, so use of an old tootbrush will be required so that I can access every part.
However, it is lined in velvet, so I can't use the usual methods, anyone able to suggest anything?A smile costs little but creates much

I've got a couple of pairs of earrings which I inherited from my late grandmother (not particularly valuable ones - they're just pretty), and I'm wondering what's the best thing to do with them. I'm guessing that I should sterilise them before wearing them for the first time, but I'm not sure what with.
To complicate matters, one pair has beads that look like laquered wood, so I don't want to soak them in anything that might damage the beads.
Does anyone have any ideas what would be the best thing to use, please?Back after a very long break!0 -

Yep, wipe the posts or wires with some surgical spirit or if you don't have that use TCP or Dettol.0

I would look for a generic metal polish in the shops, and find a very soft rag and toothpicks you can use to get the cloth into the small bits of pattern.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

I've merged this with cleaning quick questions

I would try some bicarb inside to rid any odours. Us the lining dirty?
Cleaning silver jewellery may also have some suggestions

Hi everyone,
Happy 2011 to all!
Quick question re my chairs - I have just reupholstered them in a sage green with a white floral print and they look lovely.
Is there anything I can apply to them now, so that they will be protected from stains?
Many thanksMFW #185

I don't know why but the name Scotch Brite comes to mind. I would google upholstery protector or something like that.
