Because the OP stated he only got like this after his wife died.

lol so that denotes a diagnosis of depression?

Please tell me you're not a doctor?

Perhaps his crankiness just shows up more now than before?

We visit my dad every Sunday, the only time he ever comes to our house is xmas day for his dinner. He stays in the other side of the city so it's an 18 mile round trip each weekend for us but we always go as he can be quite moody and will go in a huff if we don't visit. Last weekend we got a new puppy so we asked him if he would come over to us, he said yes but then phoned on Sunday mornig to say he wasn't feeling well. I asked him tonight if he wanted to come over this Sunday as I'm not too happy leaving the puppy for that length of time and can't take her with us as she isn't toilet trained, he said he would see, as he was decorating this weekend and he also wasn't feeling very well. Am I being unreasonable to expect him to come over more than once a year?

no i dont think its unreasonable. It should be discussed. It shouldnt be one persons terms all the time!
