Ahh right, I presumed you meant you connected by cable because your laptop wasn't wifi enabled (the wifi dongle would have made the laptop wifi-enabled....you would still need the wireless router too).
If you have a wireless router, just plugging in the laptop wouldn't stop the wifi network being available throughout the rest of the house, would it? (or do you mean you don't currently have the wireless router switched on?)
Edit - ignore above, just re-read and noticed you said you haven't got the wifi working...if you have the instruction booklet, it's a LOT easier than you might imagine, honestly.
You can easily set up a secured network, so the kids would need the password to be able to connect (in fact, if you have a wireless network, it should really be secured anyway, to stop your neighbours being able to access it).
Sorry can't help more - that's the extent of my knowledge, and even that is a bit fuzzy!"I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

What Snaggles said.. You will have to get the wifi working so you can connect the printer but I can't see why you can't keep using the internet as you are. Wifi Routers are easy enough for techno-idiots ike me. Just turn on laptop and then turn on router and it should tell YOU what to do.
Same with a wifi printer, turn them on and they should detect each other.....I'm not even sure that you would need your wifi router ON for the printer to work.
 Use my approach.....plug in........hope.
Are you SURE that your router ISNT working? There are kids in the house and they are far cleverer than us....evil little swines. :D stay wonky :D stay wonky :D :D

I know it exists, 'cos next doors au-pair came over to ask if I could tell her my password so she could piggy back on it-cheeky mare!!!When we got the next wifi modem it was asking me for all sorts of access codes/passwords so I never bothered setting it all up..Debt-free...and staying that way...0

I thought wireless printers worked like wireless mice?? i.e. you plug a receiving usb into the computer and it receives the bluetooth/infrared signal - thought it didnt need to go via the internet connection (because what if you dont have one - you dont need internet to print stuff)...

I thought the same as Becky about the wireless printer.
Snaggles, I nearly went into Debenhams today. I was walking past and saw an ad in the window for a chunky cardigan at £7.50... then realised it was a kids one and carried on walking.
Second social worker's just phoned, he's coming next friday. This time, I'm prepared!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

After talking about Freecycle last night, it seems there's controversy brewing:
