think we have another wasps nest - had the council exterminate a nest in the front of the house last year, now there is one in the back. is there any other option other than to pay £30 out for a job which takes 5minutes!!! dont like killing things but they are already coming in to the bedroom and i have a liccle aversion to anything with more than 4 legs...!
basically can i do it myself with anything?

Hi Basil,
On the In My Home board there are a couple of older threads that might help you:

Bees/Wasps Nest how to get rid!

One word of warning ....
Bees are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act 2000 and the Conservation (Natural Habitats, etc.) Regulations 1994.
It's an offence to disturb them, let alone destroy them. So be very, very sure you are dealing with wasps. It seems a little early in the year, to me - I've not seen any wasps yet, but honey bees have been out & about for months.
If you are not sure whether you have honey bees or think you might have them, then call a local beekeeper through a branch of the beekeepers association. Do this first ... they will tell you what to do if you have wasps. And if you have bees, they will remove them for you.
I know this is OS, so cost is of the essence, but if someone does you a favour - in particular, does something you would never want to do yourself - then a payment doesn't seem too outrageous ... does it? Would you do it for £30?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
We had one last year in the ivy on the side of the extension. Also paid someone £40 quid but as I hate wasps it was money well spent. Have seen some big-uns already this year. I usually keep some sort of spray in each room just in case!!!Rebel No 220

Believe me its not too early for wasps - We have loads in the garden to-day which indicates that we too have a wasp bike somewhere around - Saw a queen wasp too - huge she was - just huge so now is the time to be rid of them.Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

It is indeed wasp season already - my dad is a pest controller and has had to deal with plenty of nests already. I have HUGE wasps flying outside my halls of residence window, makes me afraid to open it even though its like an oven in here!0

The other year we got a wasps nest inside our shed attached to the roof, which I first noticed when it was about 10cm in diameter. I was told (by my uncle) to get some ant powder (from the pound shop) and sprinkle/puff it onto the nest. the insecticide is carried into the nest by all the workers and it kills the larvae etc. I wore an old decorating all in one, gloves, hat, goggles and a face mask to make sure I wasn't stung and I didn't breath in the powder. The container the ant powder was in was one that if you squeezed it, it sent out a puff of powder. It worked.I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0

Thank god for this thread, we have just found a nest inside our wall cavity. The council want £50 just to come out and look at it, then it will be £30 for the extermination and another £30 for a follow up check. I wouldnt mind be we are council tennantsWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

We had a wasp nest in our compost bin last year and I got the council pest controller out. It cost £40, I didn't mind I just wanted rid. But like Troll35, he told me to buy some ant powder and if there were any still around to put that at the entrance to the nest and the wasps would take it in and it would kill them. I bought some in but haven't needed it yet, though having killed two this morning in my kitchen I think I'll make sure the ant powder is somewhere handy.Books - the original virtual reality.

we have always managed to kill wasp nests easily,we wait until its going dark thats when most of the wasps are in the nest and the rest are fairly quiet. Then we puff wasp killing powder into the entrance of the nest and all around it.We then leave it until the next day,if we can see the nest we place a black bin liner over it and then knock it into the black bag.Luckily we have never been stung.0
