Because you're worth it Max. Whatever makes you happy.

Most regulars are already aware of my view that if you've got it.. sell it. However we each have our own views and make our own decisions.

Interesting FT article from last week... about the posh vintage / blingy watches.

Auctions: Modern pieces reflect state of the market

But difficult economic times have caused a softening of the market, meaning that owners of the best premium vintage pieces are holding on to them in the hope that values will return to the heady heights of recent years.
Already softened significantly... and markets don't work that way (by holding you don't somehow help prevent values/prices falling).. not everyone will hold and the value discovery for all owners is set by those actually transacting.... of which I bet we'll see more of during the next 18 months.
The knock-on effect is that auction houses are being forced to fill their catalogues with watches that are often little more than a few months old and which, in some cases, have never actually been worn or even removed from their hermetically-sealed factory packaging.
    /
In most cases, the prices achieved are considerably below retail, a fact that is encouraging more and more buyers to eschew their local watch shop in favour of the salerooms, regardless of the fact that they lose out on warranty rights and after-sales service.
Why are manufacturers or their outlets channelling newer pieces at considerable discount through auction salesroom? Because they still make a huge margin at that level, and they have overcapacity for their watches?

  • My dear chap, precisely!

You've just described exactly why now is an ideal time to pick up a like new quality watch for a lot less than the normal price.

The trick with life's ups and downs is to know how to use them to your advantage. ;)

Talking of watches, my brother got me looking through ebay for pocket watch double chain thingies (no, I didn't really understand what I was looking for) and we got to looking at the pocket watches themselves.

My brother collects them, never pays much for them (he gets given them in lieu of payment for gardening, picks them up at the local tip etc) but it appears he has some quite valuable ones in his collection...I was in pocket watch awe by the end of our trawl!

Not sure what the first thing I would buy on securing a shiny new job would be...probably something silly like a light fitting for my bathroom or hallway!

Or a full price book......I love books.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Congratulations MAX.
You have changed from a doll queue scrounger* into a MI6 secret agent in a few weeks.
The blonde, the suit, an expensive watch plus a high powered speedboat.

  • I fear the speedboat is some way off yet! :D

As is the Aston Martin sadly...

I see that someone in Iceland is using a web site called "Etsy" to sell hand knitted Icelandic, "MULESING FREE" sheep's wool, traditional winter hats into the N. American market.

    Makes a change from banking?!

www.etsy.com is a fanatastic idea...almost ahead of itself. It offers up the whole world to it's craft sellers.....could be the saviour for many crafts.

Aran jumpers (proper ones) are 'big' this season esp for men and son (22) and mates were looking at real handknitted ones on sale from there. Beats the High St Chinese made ones and all the £££ goes to the producer too.

Icelandic knits are lovely but itchy I recall. We used to import 'nordic' knits from a textile waste yard Holland during the mid nineties @ £2 per kilo.

OK... we partly agree, but I think we differ on the magnitude of changes (and opportunities) in value to be played out.

    Whatever would James think eh?

Lol, I don't waste money on those items either!

To spend oodles of money on a watch is illogical when there are far more better things to spend it on...like food or housing or just a better life.

It is merely a show off piece, all it tells me is that the person likes to waste money and is a bit of a show off.
Yup. Happiness that comes from expensive watches and the like is fleeting and fragile. Much better to invest in activities that preclude the need for the ego boost.
