    Hi KC

Woo hoo - shiny new diary.......:j:j

Builders skips can be a good source of timber - we broke up a load of pallets that building materials had been delivered on - plus threw a lot of the remains of the tree cutting and the old bridge into my skip. Someone immediately screeched to a halt and asked permission to take it all for their outdoor fire........took them three trips...

Something to consider though- my builders originally wanted to burn all the wood but I said no as I was a bit worried about dioxin release from the pre-treated/preserved timber in close proximity to the piggies........(cos I had been watching Judge John Deed the night before all about how dioxins are released if you don;t burn at high enough temperatures :D)

Good to see you are thinking about the house - if you're considering the possibility of selling it then the things that matter most to purchasers will be whatever is included on these new HIPS that have to be produced. There is a sample of one on a website somehere which I downloaded to fill in -

Looking forward to hearing your plans - if you'd like some top totty at reasonable rates to help you doing up the house....you know where to come ;);):D

    Hi KC,

I've read a lot of your posts from lurkdom but I've come out to play today.

One of the things that we're looking at for our wee hoose (and would probably be in your 'b' scenario) is to put in a multi fuel stove in our living/dining room. Should be someone out later this month to quote us & we have seen the fire we want - it'll cost about £2K but with lots of trees nearby & escalating fuel prices it should pay for itself quite quickly.

    Thought I would share his...

i was hoping to get one of them for the downstairs didnt realise they were that price though

I'd heard something aboutthat, didn't realise it was dioxins - I'll do further research, ta.

That is *excellent*, thank you! I've saved it in my renovating the house folder and my "green website* folder - you're exactly right, thats the kind of stuff *everyone* will be interested in.

Yes! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I wonder if thats something based on that compactor thing for waste paper, that you can burn on an open fire instead of just chucking the paper on the fire. It was supposed to be a lot more efficient, but I don't think it is. Mind you, if somebody's doing it with wood, its likely they've sorted that. Thanks El, I'll keep a lookout.

It depends on how much of the infrastructure you already have.

The stoves themselves (eg http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/categories/search/cast-iron-wood-burning-stoves-2) aren't too bad, but if you need chimney work etc it can get pretty costly.

If you're talking about getting paper and retting it and compacting it to make a kind of papiermachier brick, then it isn't really more efficient - but it does last a lot longer that just chucking paper on.

A standard sized brick lasts about an hour - but they don't burn alas, they just smoulder. Give off lots of heat though.

This thread is going to be *so* valuable to me - I just hope The Powers That Be don't shift it to the Green & Ethical Moneysaving bit, cos I'm stuffed if they do :)

    Thanks for the info, Z.

I'm zooming back and forth to the computer to play free bingo when its on. I *still* haven't won anything - and if I don't by the end of this weekend, I'm gone ..... thats two weeks!!! Its occupying a lot of brain space to keep checking and running back and forth, besides slowing me down on other things I'm doing.

DT - don't feel bad tho! Its a good plan, and as I said at the start, I've won *loads* on free bingo before. Maybe the money gods have decided I should do the stuff thats in front of me.... :money:

  • Elantan - the fire is only about £500 (and there are cheaper ones as well - ClootiesDad just likes trendy) but as we have no chimney we need a bit of work to put the fire in.

We love real fires so it will be worth it for us - plus I'm aware that strikes might be round the corner (we already have frequent postie strikes) and there's nothing worse than sitting in the dark & the cold. I believe in preparing for the worst but hoping for the best - and if you knew the bad luck we've had you'd realise that preparation is necessary in our case.
