as i said, please look on the dulux trade website, and find where it says to use pva when painting....I would think they would know better than any of us, wouldnt you?

In which case, the question has been answered already. Its only been confused by people making up what to do.

    Case closed;)

you do not PVA anything when painting.
...PVA becomes 'active' when wet. If you PVA then paint you are creating a sheet of paint on a thin layer of wet pva....You paint on new plasterboard/plaster with what is called a mist coat. This is non vynal emulsion watered down 20-30%. (something like dulux trade supermatt). See https://www.duluxtrade.co.uk and try and see where they advise this practice. These are the people who make some of the best quality paints around, just do as they say. Nowhere on the dulux site does it say anything about pva.

I will test (a) diluted PVA and (b) diluted emulsion on two pieces of spare plasterboard and see how they react when I paint emulsion on top.

I looked at some of the Dulux tips and wouldn't have much confidence in what they suggest, e.g. for "Filling holes in plaster" they say:
    * Small holes up to 50mm in depth can be filled with Polycell No Sanding Polyfilla.
    * Large holes in plasterboard must be properly filled with Polycell Deep Gap Polyfilla.

I assume Dulux and Polycell are part of the same commercial group. To use Polycell to fill large holes would be a waste of money when basic gypsum plaster is so incredibly cheap and normally the exact-same stuff that a plaster wall is made of. They don't mention gypsum, so why should they mention PVA when they have their own expensive plaster sealer which they are trying to sell? They are biased. I'm sorry but I don't trust all the Dulux advice.

    Regards
    George

PVA is Polyvinyl Acetate. Is that related to the Vinyl you see mentioned on the paint tin?

you put a mist coat (non vinyl paint watered down 20-30%) on new plaster/plasterboard.

Why add an extra layer of 'stuff' ??

Why not just accept this is the correct way to paint new walls??

  • sorry but i have to disagree with your statement as to dulux knowing better than us, I have always used dulux retail paints in my trade until i received a phone call from a member of the dulux decorators centre asking if i would like to open a cash account with them, when i challenged them as to why paint bought from there outlets is considerably dearer than dulux paint bout from say B&Q they told me it is better paint covers better and goes further, I have just completed a large contract using only paints bought from the decorating centre, I can honestly say, the job cost me at least 25% more than normal in paints and I used a damn site more of the stuff than I would have normally, it didn't go any further (less in fact) and it is way to expensive. Dulux only recommend there own products and they haven't got a clue what they are talking about, they only tell you what there head office thinks is best, and half those people have probably never picked up a paintbrush in there lives (other than at board meetings to decide how much they are going to charge for them).

Don't get me wrong, I only use Dulux paints but there advice is far to bias

  • I have just used POSH PAINT called ECO very expensive , very rubbish, very friendly to the planet, well thats thier angle, but they recomend sealing all new plaster with their sooper dooper sealer which when opened smells and looks like PVA watered down, now because they are posh are they right ?

I forgot to seal a area of filler with the sealer and the paint curled up on top of the dry filler, because it wasn't sealed. anyway whats wrong with using PVA on new plaster it only reduces the drag.Dulux would say use thier paint as a mist so they can sell more of it, I prefer Johnstones Paints , Cheaper goes further and better quillity.
I used to be confused, now I just don't understand ;) :rotfl:

does knowone understand how pva reacts when it is wet.......even after being dry for years??

There is a good reason plasterers use it you know.

For the same reason, pva should never be used anywhere near tiling, as has been discussed before on this site.
