If you can't get Virgin cable then you need a BT line, period.

    Things have moved on.

  • Hey, I had the same situation last year, when I moved in I plugged a phone in the line and dialled my mobile and it came up with a number, so I gave the number and my address to orange and they said it was fine and set up broadband, got it free too as I had a contract with them. BUT it stopped working a couple of months ago and apparently bt have changed the phone number which i foudn when i dialled my mobile again, yet the new number is registered in another flat in the block already, BT also have no number down on my line so it looks as if i may hvve to now pay :( when i check my address online it says apparently i need a new line installing because there isnt one and it will cost £122, which is surely a lie seeing as ive been recieving internet for the past year?!!

Are you saying you never took over the BT line or paid any line rental on it?

Yea tbh i think i was lucky really, the way i saw it, i had a bt line, and the t+c on orange said bt line required but not line rental payable like it does on others so didnt really think i was doing anyhting too wrong, just a bit lucky, seems like my luck has run out though!

Of course it's payable if you use the line! Presumably the previous occupier was being billed for your usage as the service was never cancelled. and now the line has been disconnected for non-payment.
