Love Nigel Slater's approach to cooking. after the programme last night he "inspired" me to use what I had for a lunch to take to work today. I had in the fridge an aubergine that needed using up, a small rectangle of feta, 1 - yes 1! cherry tomato and three felafel, I also had the end of a pot of basil. Halved and baked the aubergine, mixed the flesh with the feta and put back in the skin, covered with basil leaves and the tomato chopped into quarters and then crumbled over the felafel. Took to work and nuked it for a couple of minutes - delicious!
    Yum, that's real cooking:T

Another one who has been watching it - hoping people post links to the rest of the series to make it easier for technophobes like me:D. I wasnt sure about the idea of using readymade stuff for that trifle personally - but the general concept is a useful one of "using what one has". I'm getting more into that way of thinking re food - rather than scouring my recipe books. Gave me ideas for the rest of some roast garlic I have - ie mix with olive oil and spread on toast, top with cheese, grill - yep..reckon I could use it up that way. Wouldnt have thought of that..

As a vegetarian - I'm not going to be able to use many of his ideas - but will watch for what I can use.

Another case of house envy - liked that kitchen. The garden wouldnt be my ideal - but still a sight better than what I actually have.....sigh...

I like this much better than EG it does more to give people inspiration and not worrying about recipes gives you that little nudge to try something that you would never have thought about before.

I missed it but for your info you can get regional BBC on Sky. You can watch any local version of BBC1 ... they start at 972 and run to 988 (that's a lot of versions!!!) and then you have BBC2 England, Wales & Northern Ireland after that.

    And then there's always iplayer....

That sounds scrummy. I might just try that although I'll have to put bacon bits on one half so that his Lordship will eat it.

My little brood must be growing up, as our must-watch list includes many foodie programmes just now :p I do like to watch them even if I've no hope of getting the offspring to eat many of the recipes, but have to say this chap is a great inspiration. That's not to say I wouldn't still appreciate a '101 thing to do with bangers & mash' sort of show.
Whilst flicking through the channels, there was an Antipodean cookery show that--I think--was called "4 Ingredients", because that was all each recipe had...up to four separate ingredients! They made a lovely looking fruit cake with dried fruit soaked in fruit juice, then mixed with either self-raising flour for a diabetic version or a suitable gluten-free SR flour for those with various dietary intolerance.

Nigel Slater's "Appetite" cookbook is one of my all time favourites. There isn't a proper recipe or measurement in it! He just talks about what goes well together and relative quantites. Just my kind of cooking.

4 Ingredients is on Good Food Channel (sky 249) and is a fantastic show, some great recipes that you could try out with the kids, and a lot of it is pretty healthy stuff too.

I have a lot of time for Nigel Slater - good to see him back on the box.

There are recipes from the new book in this Sunday's Observer Food Monthly magazine or online from Sunday at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/foodmonthly

Plus hundreds of Nigel Slater recipes in the online archives:
