I'm very hard on shoes, and I find it difficult to get shoes to fit my very high instep (can't wear boots because of this. Can't wear sandals because my feet have 3 sizes of difference). I've had several operations and need to wear flat lace-ups all the time. In 2006 I bought a pair of Ecco shoes in an outlet shop while on holiday for £25. They were great, so in December 2007 I paid £100 for 2 pairs from an online shop. These are the only 2 pairs of shoes I have and i've worn them alternately every day since and they're still in shape. I can't believe it as i'd normally need a new pair of shoes every couple of months.

(By the way, OP, I trust you yourself ticked option 4 - you have not experienced any unusual sole degradation.)

If your question is directed at me, I most certainly did not tick option 4. I ticked option 1 and stand by it. For a seasoned poster in the forums your comments are rather harsh to say the least.

In what celebrity filled Hollywood boulevard do you live where normal people pay £375 to £1375 for a pair of "real" shoes as you like to refer to them?

Regarding who doesn't know that rubber degrades? Another cutting one, but I reiterate that paying in excess of £100 for a pair of shoes should get you decent quality. The original ones lasted many years REMEMBER - same shoes, same soles ...

Buy some real footwear with replaceable soles you say. Lots of these offers about, I will rush out and get some right now. I am sure they will have a style and size to fit me!

Unfortunately most consumers do not want to pay for quality, durability or repairability, you say - well actually I think many would, if the manufacturers actually delivered a quality product rather than just making lots more profit selling the same old tat at higher prices.

It is the choice of each shopper what they spend their money on and if cheap tat is your thing, go for it. I do not consider £130 cheap tat.

Car tyre disintegrate when not used, even if the car is garaged. My sister got her in-laws car. It's only done 6000 miles from new and hadn't been out of the garage for over 2 years. She had to get the tyres changed foor its MOT as the rubber started to disintegrate.

Can you tell me where these boots are please, as I can't find any to fit my calves?

M&S, Clarks, Barratts - Their boots all seem to have calves SO wide, they feel like wellies on me!!

I'm also a size 41, so perhaps bigger sizes have wider calf bits?? (although that would be illogical surely, as foot size should have no correlation to calf size!)
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Evans boots are designed for wider calves as well. I'm a size 7 but wear boots over my skinny jeans so I try and find wider ones for ease :D
  • I think the fact that your first pair of eccos lasted for a few years should show that they are good shoes?

If shoes are left for a number of years (especially with the kind of sole you're talking about) they will crumble, worn or not. This will be the same for any brand of shoes. There would not have been any way you could have prevented it from happening. Nor could the manufacturers.

You should try not to be put off buying another pair of ecco shoes though. They do have an excellent reputation and many loyal customers who buy from them again and again. As you said, it can be difficult for some people to get such comfortable shoes, especially people with ankle or feet problems. This is why the sales staff should have really told you that year on year ecco tend to bring back the same styles. Often with just a different name or changing a bit of the detail. Then you wouldn't have bulk-bought in a panic.

I used to work in a shoe shop that sold ecco shoes and we never had any complaints. Infact, ecco used to have such good customer service that even if the laces broke on their shoes, they would continue to replace them for free regardless of their age or how many times it happened.

Truly, this is not a fault with ecco shoes in particular. I'm not sure I agree that you should have automatically known that the soles would crumble but maybe you shouldn't have been so surprised when the reason was explained?
I had an elderly gent come in to the shop with a pair of clarks mens shoes with that kind of sole, that were over 20 years old. He said that they had mostly been sat in his wardrobe and that because they were crumbling he wanted a new pair for free. Needless to say we didn't swap them. I hope you don't stay to angry about the whole thing at least you know for next time.

I can't fit into any of them. I can barely get my feet into them, let alone my calves. I have wide feet, high arches and very big calves (not necessarily fat but solid, due to years of cycling).

Secondly, not all of us are getting fatter, so STOP making boots to only fit people with fat calf muscles!!

Hey, big leg muscles isn't the same as being fat :p
Besides, if I had thin legs, my heffing great feet would look even stupider... ;)
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

I have a fat leg and a really skinny leg - and size 9's. :o
  • I guess if the general public has such low expectations as mentioned in some of these posts, shoe manufacturers can charge more and give us less. After all, the quicker the shoes fall apart, the more they get to sell.

As for missymugwump - I am sorry, a year from any pair of shoes is most certainly not reasonable unless you are talking about a childs pair of shoes that would generally take a lot of abuse.

Good quality leather walking boots should last for many years. You may not have noticed that at the start of my post I said that my first pair lasted for absolutely ages. I recon it was at least 5 years if not more.

If the knowledgable shoe store owners /employees like missymugwump and the manufacturers already know that the soles will degrade with time (whether used or not), why were they not honest enough to tell me that when I purchased several pairs to keep?

    "as for me" !!!!

Did you buy your ego at the same time? what a rude way to address anyone
"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."
