  • "As an aside, my daughter has been wearing dailies since she was 10 years old. We have just signed her up for something called OrthoK lenses. You sleep in them through the night and take them out in the morning. Over a few nights your eyesight is corrected to 20/20 so you don't need to wear glasses or lenses during the day. They are only prescribing them up to a certain prescription at the moment but are working on expanding it soon. My daughter wore them the first night, went back to the opticians the next morning for an eye check and her vision in her worst eye had gone from a -4 to a -2.5 overnight!"

Where did U get these from- optician or eye hospital or elsewhere?
You know what... you can't beat a good bargain!!!

Got them from Scriven's opticians - but not many opticians do them yet. Look up orthok lenses on the internet and there should be a link telling you where your nearest dispening opticians is. They are becoming more widely available but slowly. I know there were only three opticians in the whole of the West Midlands who supply them but it was worth going a bit out of our way. The price works out about the same as we were paying for our daughter's monthly lenses plus her spectacles per year. The initial consultation was the really expensive bit (£240) BUT I still think it was worth it to improve my daughter's sight and for her not to have to wear lenses or glasses in the day. It will be absolutely brilliant on holiday - she can go swimming without worrying about not being able to see or if she wears lenses to swim she will not have to worry about having to wear her glasses at night (she hates wearing glasses - its a 14 year old thing!).

I ordered lenses from Bettereyesite.com,which are mentioned in Martins article, nearly two weeks ago but none have arrived. I received confirmation of the order and my credit card was debited.
I have queried the non delivery three times by email - you cant phone them as no number is given on their site - but no response. They are located in Jersey.
Has anyone else had problems with this company ?

Well the lenses arrived this morning from Bettereyesite.com.

Good price but cant say much about their communication - no response to 4 emails.

My son had a test at Vision Express today and they are quoting £15 a month for monthlys. It is the 1st time he has had lenses so does he need to get them from there to start with because he has no experience using them, and will they just hand over the prescription to him when he asks for it. If he had told me he was going I would have sent him to Boots because they are cheaper, but I dont think he is allowed to get another test done straight away.

Actually, that does not seem a bad price for monthlys. If its his first time wearing them I would suggest you have them for a few months so they can keep an eye on him. Once he has signed up I they should hand over the prescription - this is a common problem I have found. Most Opticians won't hand over a contact lens prescription until you have signed up to have your lenses with them. Sign up and then cancel a bit later if you want to. You did not say how old your son is, my daughter was only ten when she started with contact lenses and although we could have got them cheaper on the internet we paid £30 a month from the opticians for them as we felt it safer for her to have regular checks up as she was so young. You may want to consider this if your son is fairly young.

Although, if the cost includes cleaners and solutions I am not sure you would get them that much cheaper on the internet.

He is 23 and just finishing uni. He has been into Boots today to ask their advice, and they will do them for £11 a month with the solutions. He has to pay £25 for a contact trial so he is going to try that. He felt a bit silly though, they tried a pair in his eyes, and he said after a few minutes he went dizzy and felt sick thought he was going to pass out. He had had no sleep for over 24 hours because he stayed up all night finishing off his last uni project, and had nothing to eat. He has an appointment on Monday to try again so I told him to make sure he is not overtired before he goes. I have worn contacts for 38 years gas permeable now but used to be the normal hard ones, and have never had any trouble. In fact I dont even have any glasses, because I wear them all the time.

My daughter's 14 too, and over the moon that she can have lenses - she hates glasses too, and got on really well with her new lenses immediately. Just wondering if anyone knows where we can buy monthly lenses for her on line - the sites I've looked at (Tesco and Postoptics) say legislation prevents them from dispensing lenses to customers under the age of 16.
    Thanks

I thought i would take Martins advice and found my contact lenses significantly cheaper online. Problem is i can only find 1 optician local to me who is willing to provide a contact lense prescription for a cost of £45! All the rest declined due to the fact that i stated i would not sign up to their monthly scheme.
