It also sounds like he could do with a new solicitor. From what has been posted, they have been absolutely no help. Anybody can say, nope, sorry, nothing you can do. But there's always a legal argument in there somewhere!

  • Thought i'd send an update on whats happened with this.

I got the car back from them in the end, although had to pay for it to be towed to me. Garage decided not to charge me storage fee's, and the car is currently sat rotting on my drive.

This sounds a bit harsh I know, but buying a car from a place like that is only ever going to end in heartache .. my local scrap yard has better stock.
have to agree, no warranties, not even a landline contact number, typical back street garage.
you paid in cash, at least on credit card you could of pursues the chargeback...probably unsuccessfully tho.

i did find this interesting article on 'sold as seen', and have used it myself when selling cars, tho as a private seller you dont need to express any kind of warranty.
i guess yes car credit would of been cheaper for you.

  • Now is the time to think about the engineers report (I know, a lot more money, but see if you can find a friendly local garage to give an opinion. Explain your situation and they may well hold off on payment for a while)

  • Thanks everyone. I may do that after Christmas. I was very naive buying from there in the first place. I needed a car quick and didn't even think.

You won't be the first person to be taken in like that, and you won't be the last either. Got stung a few years ago with something similar when I bought a Jimny for my OH, and ended up having to replace both front brake disks and the front driveshaft gaiters. Managed to get him down to halfers on the gaiters, but went on my own for the brakes since I could get the bits cheaper than him, and fit them myself. Also gave me a chance to completely overhaul the calipers, which he would never have bothered doing, and I'd have been getting new disks again a few months down the line. Had it for 2 years, and finally had to get rid of it when 3 wheel bearings went (£130 each for the fronts, plus £80 for the fitting tool), the irony being that my brother took it to auction, and it ended up back at the SAME PLACE we bought it from.... On sale for £200 less than we paid for it, and about £1000 more than he paid at auction.

hmmm, sorry it ended that way, although it sounds like it could have been worse.

We are all entitled to a mistake or 2, move on. learn from it, and screw the bast***s into the ground next time, ;) :T:T:T
