Asda - charging me for someone elses petrol - won't refund me

This is basically what happened / the email to Asda i sent, i was a bit pre-occupied and the gent I had just brought the car from filled it up for me (as it is LPG he was showing me how it differs from using a petrol pump):
EMAIL TO ASDA:
I brought petrol from your store in Hartlepool on Sunday. Having just purchased the car in question I had other concerns. So when I got the the kiosk I didn't check the amount. Later on that day I looked at the receipt, and I had been charged £5 extra for someone elses petrol ! On a different pump) I am obviously not happy about this, and expect a refund. I do however not live in Hartlepool, and can not return to the store as it is a 400 mile round trip.
ASDA RESPONSE:
Thank you for contacting ASDA recently regarding payment for petrol at our Hartlepool store.
All our petrol pumps have displays on them showing the customer how much petrol they are putting in their vehicles and also how much it will cost them. Unfortunately, because of this, I will be unable to refund the £5 overcharge you claim to have incurred.
Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.
This seems shocking to me, especially as I still have the receipt in question - I know its only a fiver, but I think its well out of order for them to not offer me a refund. Especially as it was on a different pump, what was I supposedly doing ? Filling up two vehicles at the same time ???
Any views on this / what I should do next ?
Thanks in advance

Was it petrol or LPG?
You are not exactly presenting a convincing argument. Sorry to sound harsh, but it was for you to check the price at the pump and ensure that it reconciled with the charge.0 -
I'm not really sure what they can do about it now, you have a receipt for the amount you paid. You should have checked and said at the time. Do you think the guy that was undercharged will have gone back and said "hey you undercharged me?" I very much doubt it.
They only really have your word that you were indeed charged too much, how can you prove otherwise?
I would forget about it if I were you and be a bit more observant in the future.0 -
Surely this is your fault for not checking the amount when you paid.
I can't see what you expect ASDA to do.0 -
I'm not sure why you even bothered writing to Asda, as you can't PROVE you actually paid for someone elses fuel...
The amount is clearly displayed on the pump, so I'm afraid you should just put it down to a mistake, and in future make sure you know how much you've put in.redsclubbedup wrote: »

If you BROUGHT (bring) the petrol, then that implies you didn't pay for it at all...! I presume you meant you BOUGHT (buy) it? :rolleyes:Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I didn't think it was possible to charge you for another pumps fuel if you are on a different pump?
Separate receipts are issued for each pump are they not?
Was it LPG or petrol you purchased?0 -
This works both ways am afraid, the cashier made a mistake in charging you the wrong amount and you made the mistake of not checking it was the correct amount.
Did you give the wrong pump number at the till? Or did they just presume you came from a certain one?0 -

its a bit annoying, but yes i am going to have to leave it - basically i bought the car that day and the gent i bought it from was showing me how to fill it up with LPG as it is different to petrol - i told him to just fill it up to the top - which he did
i then went to pay for it, and was handed the card machine with the amount on £30 - it wasnt until later that i went to calculate what kind of mileage i was getting that i noticed the error.
The receipt reads along the lines of
pump 1 - LPG - £25
pump 2 - petrol £5
obviously i could not have driven two cars in and filled them at the same time. i was just a bit wary as my girlfriend recently had a similar situation - where she paid for petrol on her car, to later see that a packet of cigarettes had been added to the bill (she doesn't smoke) - I know that in both cases we should have been paying more attention, but when you have things on your mind theses things sometimes get missed !0 -
am trying to get head round this - you werent charged a different pump you were charged an additional pump! why did cashier think you were going to pay someone elses petrol bill? did the old gent go off without paying? or - did the cashier take a five pound note and open the till without putting amount tendered . this takes a till to total and clears it for next customer. if this is not done then the till stays at sub-total and additional purchases can be made. this is down to bad staff training if it happened to you gf as you say. i would complain further and send them a copy of reciept explaining as you did in last paraggraph otherwise it just reads you were overcharged. (which is how i read it)0

if this is happening regularly with the same cashier i would suspect they are stealing and have worked out that if they pocket an occasional fiver or tenner they can add it to next customers bill. if customer complains at time, they can then say was mistake and the customer will be reimbursed. this way its unlikely they will get caught!0
