Local jeweller told me these companies can be a con. Don't offer as much as they promise like saying some is not useable and then charge a fortune for return postage. Think he said something about reclaiming original postage.

He would say that, did he say how much he was offering for 9ct gold, probably around £3 - £4 per gramme as a 'local' jeweller.

Best to lay all the jewellery out on a piece of white A4, photograph it, print it off in colour then number each piece on an inventory before copying it, you keep one and send one with your jewellery, then there's no quibbling about pieces and which were good, which were no good and you can track any pieces you want returning for a second opinion

There's some reputable internet gold buyers around who pay what they say, there was a thread a couple of months ago that recommended two or three internet gold buyers.

It's with the legal team, according to the person I just spoke to, as it was a mistake. I will be receiving a call back in a 'few' days to tell me if they're sending them out or not!

They also took my money on Monday so I am not happy.

Surely by charging the card they are entering into a binding contract to supply the goods?

Not necessarily. I'm pretty certain Tesco's T&C's state that a contract is only formed upon delivery.

    4. Payment and acceptance

If you buy an item from the Tesco Direct Catalogue on the phone, in-store or online you will be charged for an item at the time you place your order. After this time, you cannot amend your order (but please see our cancellation policy in section 6 below).

Your order is an offer to buy from us. Nothing that we do or say will amount to any acceptance of that offer until we actually despatch an item to you, at which point a contract will be made between us. At any point up until then we may decline to supply an item to you. If we decline to supply an item to you and you have already paid for it, we will give you a full refund of any amount already paid for that item in accordance with our refund policy in section 7 below.

Where items are despatched separately, our acceptance of the order in respect of each item takes place when that item is dispatched.

Exactly, lots of companies now state this, here is an example from B&Q's website. ;)
After submitting an order to us we will send you an order acknowledgement email with your order number and details of the goods that you have ordered. Please note this email is an acknowledgement and is not an acceptance of your order.
