Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Saturday 6th September. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning all

Bitsy - I am so sorry you had a rotten night hugs.giffor you.
Lilibet - Hope your performance management meeting went well and well done on the cooking club, I think it's a fantastic idea.
Aussie - we gave him £20, (The only note that was in the wallet actually!) but it could have cost us a lot more than that if someone unscrupulous had found it of course.
Noahs - yes, we think it's cos she wakes up starving and eats them way too fast! And I was with you, I so wanted Siovash to win though I suspected he wouldn't.
Mehifin - Glad to hear your news, that must be a relief.
Helgy - I hope the nightmares stop soon hon. hugs.gif

Had to rescue my biggest pepper plant yesterday afternoon. My OH came back from work to say it was leaning badly to the left due to the high winds and the heavy crop. So he carried it indoors and I retied it. It's huge and has so many peppers on it. They are all fairly small but I have 12 orange and 33 green peppers on the one plant! Trouble is, the label has faded so I have no idea what variety it is. It's a good 4ft high though. Click HERE for pics (The first one is my smallest pepper plant with the huge fruit, and the rest are the biggest plant!)

Picked up a lovely big sack of potatoes from the local farm yesterday afternoon for £6.50. They are all huge - big baking potato size which is lovely. I will be making a leek and potato layered thingy for tea with a cheese sauce. Home grown leeks of course.

Had an email from an old school friend who lives in London - she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She only found the lump 3 wks ago and had the biopsy within days and is having it removed together with the glands under her arm on the 11th. Having been through the same I know where she is right now and it's a scary time.

I hope the weekend starts well for you all. Warm gentle grouphug.gif for anyone who wants one!

    Good morning everyone.

MSD - what a fantastic pepper plant! I've never grown one but I think I'll have a go next year after seeing yours!

I'm so sorry about your friend's diagnosis. One of my closest friends had a mastectomy about seven years ago - she went through a dreadful time but has emerged the other side and is now fighting fit and always on the go. She's one of the most positive people I know so I hope things turn out well for your friend. It's a worrying time, isn't it? I didn't realise you had been through the same, so (((hugs))) to you for always sounding upbeat and positive.

Well, having had three bad nights' sleep on the run, I actually had a good night's sleep last night for which I'm really grateful. I was beginning to despair. When I was younger, I could cope with it but these days I need my ZZZZZs!

It's quite cool here at the moment but the forecast from tomorrow is for more sunny weather - I hope this means the UK, too. I think I heard that mid-week in the UK will be warm and sunny, so fingers crossed. I'm not looking forward to the really cold weather - we haven't got all our radiators in yet because the house is still a work-in-progress. We need to get our central-heating oil ordered soon, too, to make sure we're ready. The winters here are shorter than in the UK but a lot colder - last year, apparently, it reached -13 degrees in this area! I'm not used to that!

Well, dinner tonight is roast chicken - I followed Econ Gastron's advice and bought a whole chicken (about 4lb in weight) which I jointed - not as neatly as they did on the programme! - but, for €5.31 I have two legs, two wings, two breasts and a carcass for chicken soup - it would have cost a lot more if I'd bought the pieces separately. I also bought enough mince for three meals for €5 and some lovely lamb pieces - enough for two meals - for €1.91 - a real bargain. The lamb here is a lot cheaper than in the UK and it's local. I was going to do spag bol tonight but we've been invited out for dinner tomorrow lunchtime, and we're having spag bol then, so, as the weather is cool, I've decided a roast will be perfect today.

Well, I'm longing for another cuppa so I'm off to put the kettle on again.

    See you all later.

    Good morning everyone

Up early as i start work at 6am on a saturday...i only do a 2 and a half hour shift tho (i do replen at a supermarket).
Then i've got to get oldest daughter to a birthday party by 10am, oh that will be fun!

Ordered the shopping online from Tesco this week, didn't need alot but wanted one of the shoulders of lamb they've got on offer, our local store never seem to have them , if i order online the order comes from a larger store a bit further away.
Ordered the largest piece of lamb they do and will hopefully get at least 3 meals out of it...hubby thinks i've gone a bit crazy since i got the economy gastronomy book

Hope everyone has a good day ;)
  • Morning Mioliere! Yes I had my 5 yr all clear sign off 4 yrs ago in October.

Yes the pepper plant is huge but most of the other ones I am growing are not as prolific. Beauty Bell is good - quite large with large fruit too and the compact Redskin (as in the first pic) is a small plant but has full size peppers on it quite amazingly and they can be grown indoors as they are so small.

Hi Annie - I often do a Tescos order to get the offers too as it comes from a store down in Plymouth rather than my local one and they seem to have more stock. Hope you have a good morning at work!

Hilstep - so glad you are finally feeling better, shingles is so painful isn't it? And wow on the weightloss, though a horrible way to lose it!! Hope you get stronger from here on in.

I have never had a pepper plant quite so amazing either, but this year I bought a mixed plug plant set online and they are all doing well - just the label is illegible in the huge one so no idea what it is!

    :hello:Good morning!

Up early (actually haven't had much sleep at all!) Penny was spayed yesterday and poor little mite has been whimpering on and off ever since! I feel so guilty! I have just given her a painkiller in some food so hope she will settle down for a while. Dh is sleeping through it all:rolleyes: just like he did when the kids were little!

I stubbed my toe yesterday and it has come up purple and bruised, so today will be spent catching up on some chores at home. I have 5 jars of plum chutney to label up, some runner beans to freeze down and some pears to make into jam. I also need to check through my card supplies and get making cards again.

(((hugs))) for your friend MSD - a very scary time for her but you should be a great inspiration for her to draw strength from.

Glad to hear you are feeling better now Hilstep x

Off to try for some shut eye now as Penny has settled down a little.

I spoke too soon! This is heartbreaking she is still whimpering!

    Catz x

Morning. What are all you lot doing up this early on a Saturday?

Looks to be a little better weather here today. I have to work at 12, so not much planned for this morning other than cleaning up the garden from the high winds and cleaning out chicken houses.

Had a great meal last night with friends. Tesco have shoulder of lamb on offer which makes it a really good price.
Had to shop between ASDA and Tesco to find what I wanted yesterday..... Missed out on the 5p fuel voucher. Still I recon even with CC point ASDA is still better value for money
    Well, have a good day....

    Morning all.
Went to bed far too late as I was overtired (my own stupid fault). Neighbours friends leaving and the local rabble were being noisy so that kept me awake til after midnight grrrrr. Kids slept better although DD was doing her usual tossing and turning at 5am. 5.50am DS appears in our bedroom so I got into bed with him but unsuprisingly that was it for it - once my kids are awake then no chance of getting them to go off again!
H has to drop a work's car back this morning so hopefully I can wheedle a nap this afternoon out of him ;)
Got to put BM on and put a load of washing on. There is no way I can get chores done whilst childminding. Even simple ones like putting on a load of washing never gets done as the kids are demanding my attention.
Picked some more courgettes, my brassicas seem all but finished which is a shame. I've got some winter peas to sow but not sure if there is anything else I can use to fill the space with. Any ideas? I am guessing stuff (like my leeks) that are ready for winter have been sown and planted already.

Diva - Your pepper plant is amazing. I had one last year but had to keep it at my mums house in her porch (faces south so like a mini greenhouse temp wise!). never bothered this year just bought them all cheap from Aldi in Super 6 and froze them!.
I am really sorry to hear about your friend. Well done on getting your all clear though. I know how worrying lumps in the breast can be. For past 6 years I have been under the care of a consultant who was monitoring lumps that I have (he calls them fibroadenoma - benign but he tells me not to be complacent). Had to have a couple removed but thankfully during my first pregnancy they shrank so am hoping they are all but gone now.......

Hilstep - so glad you are feeling much better today.

Catznine - your poor kitty. Hope Penny isn't in too much discomfort today. Still better a little whimpering than an unwanted litter if kittens. Hope your toe is better soon too.

Have a good day all OS or not.
Hugs to those that need them.

    MSD (((hugs))) for your friend

Catznine - poor penny, saw your photo's on facebook - hope she has a better day today.

Bright and sunny but a little chilly at the moment, washing just finishing in the machine then a couple more loads to do.

Housework is the order of the day today, just gonna poodle round and get it done, no rushing around like a headless chicken as dont have too much energy today. Still waiting for OH to come him from work -think he will be asleep all day. He used our new lorry last night so I had to ring him & check it was still pristine this morning :D

Hope to get the menu planning done today, looking forward to next week when the kids are back at school all week & I can start getting my life back in order.

    Have a great Saturday.x
