  • So yeah, I'm proof it does work!

Nice one - well done matey!

So you have a combined £1k o/d now? I have a £700 and £500. I basically added £500 to the Plus account one which was set at £200 for the initial 6 months.

I basically went into branch and asked for £700 in accordance with my credit score and guaranteed products, she looked dumbfounded at me before realising I'd obviously spoken to someone in the 'know' and she confirmed my maximum o/d that would be guaranteed is £1200 and so applied it. It got referred but a day later appeared on my account.
    :o 2010 - year of the troll :o

I got a letter confirming my Aqua Card was cancelled today. In the letter it seas if any more payments are made such as revolving payments, then they will be granted and you will be statemented. Also, I still have £350 available credit online. I'm thinking they haven't cancelled it, and just keep it idle for a few months?

Who thinks Barclays is a good:

    a) Bank Account provider

    b) Credit Card provider

Obviously, if you think they are useless and no good at either/or the above then let it be known.

I am thinking of applying so any responses will be greatly appreciated.... :T

I have mixed feelings about them myself. I have a Barclay (ex Goldfish) credit card. I feel that their security is oversensitive and inconsistent. I had a transaction declined yesterday for £25. The previous day one went through for £180. A couple of days before that one went through for £187. I normally use the card once a month for a small CCA and another CCA goes out every 2 - 3 months (never more than £7). I often get automated calls about these. Yet the two larger transactions were approved unchallenged but the £25er was declined. If they really want to do a security number, maybe it's the larger transactions they should be questioning.
Also, those damned automated calls are soooooooooooooooooooooo long winded and frustrating (and I pay for them because they are usually on divert to my mobile). I'm sure they could manage a shorter version.
It gets quite annoying having to stop work for a few minutes, tools in hand or half way up a ladder, to listen to their drivel whilst selecting the correct buttons to press.

EDITED TO SAY: The two larger transactions that were accepted were "cardholder not present". The one that was declined was in a shop where I WAS present. I would have thought that the "not present" transactions would be the ones to ring alarm bells.

    its gone very quiet.....

Must be something you said :D .

I've got 4 cards with MBNA all with zero balance. Just as well really because they jacked up the interest on all my accounts to 30%+. I tried to get some cash out of an ATM recently (wouldn't normally do it but needed some quick cashflow while cheques were clearing). It wouldn't let me have any because I haven't used the card for a while. Lucky I had another card with me I suppose.
The daft thing is that if MBNA were to offer me a reasonable interest rate at life of balance, we could be doing some business with each other. As it stands, they want an extortionate rate so I don't bother. Those 0% for 6 - 12 months deals seem to have long since dried up for existing customers but I don't want a quick fix. I want a longer term reasonable rate. If they were to offer this, I could save a bit of money and they could start making a bit of money from me. A single figure LOB offer would get me transferring about 3 grand but they obviously consider me a bad risk due to what I already owe.

I've always had a good experience with Halifax but many people say they are !!!!!!. Been considering opening an account with another bank and running money through it each month to build up my internal score for the benefits.

I have also always had a good experience will Halifax. Always been prompt and never had any problems that needed fixing. *Touches wood*

Only thing I dont like with Halifax is when my student account finishes in July 2010 then it will probably get transferred to one of the accounts that it costs £1 per day. But am stoozing it whilst its interest free and adding to my savings account so I can pay it all off in one big transaction next year.

I say HSBC 100%. They have been great to me and to be fair, respect to them :T A few people on here are loyal HSBC'ers

I go back to 1983 with hsbc and over the years it has worked out very well for me.

However, I also like Nat West, whom have made me some very decent loans over the last 20 years.
  • I always liked Girobank... ha ha ha. (But we've done the thread on betamax.)

For business/pleasure can't say I'm impressed with HSBC. First encountered them as a student when they were Midland. Summary of problems:

    1) They linked someone elses cash card to my current account. I had months of "phantom withdrawals" and constant struggles to get the cash back. Each time they denied responsibility but refunded ex-gratia. Until about the dozen'th withdrawal, they didn't bother to investigate (and even then they took weeks). Turns out when they issued a new card to someone, they did a name look up and didn't cross check the account number.

    2) I asked for a personal US dollar account. They would only do this for my company, not for me. If I wanted one, I had to go "offshore" (CI, IoM etc).

    3) When I worked overseas (HSBC accounts there and here) I was constantly told that I wouldn't pay for ATM cash withdrawals in the "other country". But I often was - which they variously put down to billing errors, local gov legislation etc. They never got their act together, despite being the "world's local bank". They are not "joined up".

    4) Finally I hadn't used a current account for several years. It had about £25 in it. When I finally decided to close it, they said they had no trace of it. My address hadn't changed, but I had noticed statements stopped and there was no letter. The local manager just said "we probably closed it". I have another word for it!

Actually I don't think they are any worse than the others...

Despite having a behaviour score of 73 with HSBC, they refuse to even give me a £50 overdraft, due to credit scoring. I've written a letter. I'm actually getting sick of them not giving me an overdraft. The reason I wanted a Halifax reward is because you are guaranteed the amount shown and it often changes. My barclays account never changed from £0 guaranteed, no matter if I ran £2k through it each month.

How long did you bank with Barclays for? if it is less than 12 months your pre approved offers will have full application markers against them i.e you will need to make a full application for credit products as your history with the bank will be to short for them to grant you credit based solely on your account conduct.

They are now for their Premier Members (£50K) plus.
