Another cake I loved from years ago when I lived in Oxford in the early 1960s was Lardy Cake, my big brother used to bring it home from work and it was delicious but very sweet and extremely calorific, comfort food if your feeling a bit down, haven't seen that for years either .

Oooooh Jackie! I had forgotten about lardy cakes. My mum used to buy one for me as a treat now and again. Golly I loved them.. I can almost taste the greasy, sugary scrumptiousness!! Thank you for that lovely memory!

There is a recipe for lardy cake here if you want to make one yourself. They also have some great British recipes for all sorts of nostalgic foods.
Oh Butterfly! I think I love you! :rotfl::rotfl: I am so baking these as soon as I can! I was off to google when I caught your post and now I don't have to bother. Thank you so much.

  • i used to work in a bakery and they were just called cheesecakes.. though they have no cheese.. its thick puff pastry with a blob of jam and a blob of sponge cake baked.. then coated with thick fondant icing and shredded sweetened coconut..

    dont have a recipe though
  • i found this recipe..
    here
  • OMG! Totally forgotten about cheese cakes. YUMMY! Though here in the extreme south east ( France is closer than London) they were never called London Cheesecakes.

As for local - well huffkins and gypsy tart are rather local apparently. LOVED GT at school, all ways with half an apple, to 'save' our teeth! LOL
