I just had a look at them and as a born and bred Londoner I have only ever known them as Cheesecakes but why I have no idea as there is nothing in the least cheesey about them I haven't seen one of them for a long time I used to love getting one from the bakers van when he came round our way as a young and very pregnant wife back in 1967.
Another cake I loved from years ago when I lived in Oxford in the early 1960s was Lardy Cake, my big brother used to bring it home from work and it was delicious but very sweet and extremely calorific, comfort food if your feeling a bit down, haven't seen that for years either . favorite of all was 'Dunkies which were sold in packets of four ,glazed ring dounghnuts oh I'm salivating at tthe thought of one right now
There is a recipe for lardy cake here if you want to make one yourself. They also have some great British recipes for all sorts of nostalgic foods.
Enjoy - I know I love this site x

I am a londoner and we just called them cheesecakes. never knew there was any other type until we mixed with more sophisticated types.
I miss the olfd fashioned bakers with their madeline type cakes- its all donuts and muffins now. boob0 -
When I lived in London, we had a bakers just along the road called Breda's Patisserie. They did the usual split tin loaves etc, but also had lovely patisseries.
I was in primary school at the time and my friend and I used to run errands for the headmaster which included going to Bredas for florentines for him and his wife. Headmaster gave us enough money to also get ourselves a packet of Polos each (2p a pack then, which we were allowed to eat in school, when no-one else was allowed to eat sweets. What a privilege that was!)
I always wondered what florentines tasted like and it wasn't until several years later that I got to try them.
We also had another bakers a couple of blocks along the same road. That one was your bog standard bakers that sold cakes such as cream puffs, cheesecakes, (the ones we're discussing here, as well as the cheesy cheese cakes) fake cream doughnuts, (I used to love that fake cream!) chelsea buns, iced buns, etc, etc.
Haha, I'm rambling a bit now, but this thread took me back a few years. :rotfl:0 -
Slightly off topic here but the other day I went into a bakers near me to buy an uncut loaf only to be told "Sorry, we don't sell bread!!" Apparantly they just sell snacks and sandsiches. What is the world coming to? They had the cheek to have "BAKERS" written above the door too!
In another so called bakers my husband wanted a baguette with cheese, ham and salad in. He was told "Sorry, you can have ham with salad, or cheese with salad but not ham and cheese together!"
And one more thing... In a bakers I went to once the lady in front of me in the queue asked for a coffee. The woman serving asked her if she wanted sugar to which the lady replied she wanted just half of one of their little sachets. The woman serving said "Sorry, you either have a whole sachet or none at all!!"
I know this has nothing to do with cheesecakes, I've already posted what I used to call them, but thought you might find these bakery experiences of mine amusing!!I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!
I seem to have a nasty habit of killing threads!0 -
I remember these cakes and we use to call them something else - but for the life of me i cant recall what it was.
I never knew them as London cheesecakes until a few years ago.
Maybe they were coconut slices - bugging me now -shall have to call my sister at lunchtime0 -
I've only ever known them as Cheesecakes, long before we had any alternative types of cheesecake that had any actual cheese in them.:D
The only other cheesecake I knew as a child came from a packet 'Greens' cheesecake mix, with the sachet of biscuit dust to mix with butter for the base, and a powder you mixed with milk for the topping, which I am pretty sure never saw any cheese either.Mortgage
