washing machine knackered?

My washing machine has just made a horrid crunking grinding noise at the end of the cylce, there is a weird strong solvent-y smell inside it, the drums spins but looks like its now slightly off centre and there is a dent in the back of the drum. Any idea could have happened?

  • maybe a spring gone holding the top of the drum in place.
could try taking the top off and seeing if its swaying about, I lashed mine up when spring went about 5/6 years ago with 2 cable ties and they are still there!
Cant think what the smell might be tho???

could be a spring or the main bearing.
the smell could be the drum rubbing against a synthetic rubber seal or similar.
    Get some gorm.
  • I've had absolutely no luck at all with washing machines and have also had this problem before. Mine did the same thing almost gave me a heart attack with the final spin came with a loud clattering sound. The repairman came out luckily it was still under guarantee at the time. He says there must have been a coin in the washing machine which caused the drum to become twisted and make this awful screeching sound when it was spinning.
We never found the coin but then I wondered if it wasn't a coin but maybe a metal buckle or button off denim clothes?

I'm on about my 9th washing machine in 20 years now. My 10th will definitlly be a Hotpoint and the best I can offord to buy as many swear by them, MIL had hers 16 years:T
Another lesson learnt from MIL,,she went out a couple of weeks ago and left her washer on doing a load,,came back to a flooded house. I've not done this since!

Don't buy a Hotpoint, whatever you do, certainly not based on your MIL having hers for the last 16 years. They were much better then and the only thing modern Hotpoints inherit from machines of that age is the name.

If you're serious about a washing machine lasting a decent length of time and being reliable, there is only one make to buy - Miele.

Some might say they are expensive - infact over their life span they have the cheapest cost of ownership of any washing machine by a mile.

i've been checking out the bottom of the range Miele, but having got 8 years daily use out of a Bosch hubby is happy to have another. Shame we've just spent all our pennies on a new kitchen or I would have pushed for the miele

    Hi

I'm affraid to say that a Bosch made 8 years ago was a better more reliable and longer lasting machine.

Bosch are intend on becoming the 'Hotpont' of Europe and the only way they can do that is by making things cheaper therefore reducing the quality! Madness!

but will it last 21 yrs?
my 3 x indesits did not cost as much as a single miele.

my first ever washer after I left home was a 30 year old meile in the commubnity centre were I lived and worked - I'd hazard a guess its still going 18 years on! And then of course there is the environmental impart of making, disposing of and transporting 3 cheap machines...
