If he's given you his name and the reference number you need to go to your local WU agent with your passport or similar and if everything tallies they hand over the cash. Might be worth a phone call first to check that the system is the same - my transaction was nearly a year ago. My previous experience was also with a Greek buyer!

It's a nuisance that he's decided to do his own thing, but I'd go with it and collect the money (assuming the transaction is genuine). I live in Luton and every other off-license does WU!

Potentially, it's cash in your hand, and no fees to pay poopal. Muppet buyer gets his item. Everyone wins.

Western Union is dangerous for the buyer, the seller has cash in his hand before he sends

The buyer emailed me saying he can't believe I haven't got the money yet, he sent it on 2/5.

Well I felt like saying sorry but i've not been able to get into town yet, a special trip just to get this money.

One question: if Western Union is so great why have eBay banned it?

I would never allow a buyer to pay by Western Union.

It is banned because scammers like to ACCEPT it.

If they used it to PAY then everyone would love to deal with scammers.

Scammers do sometimes offer to pay using WU, but if you're daft enough to send an item on the strength of them TELLING you they've paid, as opposed to you GETTING the money, well....

So its word of month that people get caught out? Someone sells a mobile phone, the buyer says they have sent the money, the buyer sends the phone to Nigera before they have money in hand? Is this what all the trouble has been about?

As you all know I know very little about Western Union but eBay have banned it for a reason. I have always got the impression that WU is open to fraud, I don't get how yet but I will.

Perhaps the fact that ebay own paypal has something to do with it?

I would much rather walk out of a Western Union branch with cash in my hand (and no fee) than get a paypal email saying I've got funds but we're taking a cut (and may well take all the money back out of your account if the buyer turns out to be dodgy!) and there's nothing you can do about it!
