Western Union

A newbie bought one of my items from Greece and has opted to pay by Western Union. He said hes paid £26 and has given me a money control number. He says hes no idea what paypal is and if I don't accept this WU then he will have lost £26.

What is my options with this, where would I cash it and what would the fees be if any?

Cheers

First off, if you didn't list it as a seller then you don't have to take it.

All I know about WU is that fraudlent (usually foreign) sellers usually request it as they cannot be traced when they have run off with your money.

I'd ask the buyer to do all the legwork here, they shouldn't have made the transfer without checking it out, so they should tell you how to get your cash.

You've still got the option to tell them to pay by paypal (and learn what it is quick), but I think I'd look at the second chance offer asap!

You would collect the money from any western union outlet. You will need ID and the reference number the sender gives you and they will give you the money, the fees are paid by the sender, so you will collect the full amount they sent.

You may want to check out the ID situation as when I used to send money via western union, they used to ask me what ID the recipient would be bringing (i.e. passport) and that is the ID the recipient had to bring to be able to collect the money, they couldn't bring a different form of ID. This may no longer be the case though.

Just be sure that you don't send the item until until you have the money in your mits (grubby or otherwise).

That's where some gullible people have been caught out. They get an email saying the money's been sent and send off the goods, then WU know nothing of the transfer.

Did you actually state in the auction description that you would accept Western Union as a method of payment? If not, I would explain to the buyer that this isn't a method that you accept and could they make a payment by some other means.

I think I'm right in saying that eBay.com and eBay.co.uk have now banned payment via western union.

I really don't see a problem here, his obviously a newbie and there doesnt seem to be a problem. Just ask him in what name/details he sent the money in, collect it and once the money is in your hands, ITS YOURS!!!

Atleast you dont have to pay the paypal fees and the second offer option will mean you would be getting less money than this guy, there cannot be a way of him conning you if you follow the simple step. Just collect the money and once its in your hands send the goods.

    Hope that helped.

I know everyone seems to be scared of Western Union but I sold some records to a guy in Croatia that wanted to pay using Western Union so I told him I'll only post when I had collected the money. I went down to the place, handed over the ref. number and walked out with the cash then posted his records. I maybe missing something but that seems safer than cheque or paypal to me.

Exactly! That's what I mean, I know the buyer cannot really dispute claims as there isnt really a record on western union. However, I do think WU is a great way to send and receive money, for new people or people who dont know very much WU isnt really the thing as it is open to fraudulent activities, but if you know your stuff there sno way your getting conned.

I state that I only accept Paypal for overseas payments but not all buyers listen

I sometimes get cheques, bank transfer or even Postal Orders from overseas but I have never had Western Union.
