I never bothered about an engagement ring. I had my wedding ring and after my two children I had a very nice eternity ring.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Hi All,
After being adamant that he would never do it again (1st wife did the dirty on him), B/F had a change of heart, and proposed to me on Tuesday!
I am, obviously, a very happy bunny now!
We are going ring-hunting on Sat, and I was thinking white gold or platinum. I thought white gold was cheaper, so would go for that, but I just read that as it is plated, it needs re-plating every year or so - is the the case?
If so, am I better off with Platinum? - and what should I expect to pay for a simple diamond solitaire? - Not being unromatic, I want a lovely ring to treasure forever, but in true MSE fashion I don't want to spend too much!
Any thoughts peeps?

Have fun shopping!!0 -
http://www.geraldonline.com have some excellent bargains. Much cheaper than the high street. Here I go again on my own....0

If you must do high street, barter most have a margin of 15 - 20% they can knock off. Otherwise (and I know it's far) the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham is very cheap, it's about 40%+ cheaper then high street, must be similar types of shops in Bristol?2p off is still 2p off!0

My rings are white gold. Chosen because they look shinier than the rather matt finish of platinum (& cheaper). I think the shinyness sets of a diamond solitaire better. I had mine re-plated once in 18 years and that was only because I had my engagement ring reset so it was suggested that the wedding ring should be replated at the same time.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hi, I thought exactly the same as you about white gold but still went for a wedding band in it. My husband chose white gold first and then after a year it had almost lost all its gold and he switched to platinum.
We have used the same jeweller for years and bought some very expensive stuff from him during that time so we can trust him when he gives us advice.
He said that the type of skin you have can greatly affect how the ring wears. My skin is dry beyond belief and I must say my ring is as shiny as the day I bought it, my husband who has a much more oily skin had real problems with his white gold ring.
So bear that in mind when choosing.
But a real word of caution, platinum ends up lookng really base and dull so if you can avoid it at all, I would do.Tried and Tested0 -
Congratulations!! I can only pass on the advice my mother gave me. At the end of the day after all the excitement and celebrations you are left with the ring on your finger. Buy what you like, imagine wearing it in 30 years time - think to yourself will I still like it, and buy the one you can say yes to. My engagement ring was relatively cheap, but quite unusual and even after wearing it for 19 years I still really like it.
Good Hunting!!0
